Moving To America To Be With My Girlfriend -
August 10th 2011, 06:39 PM
I love my girlfriend so much and we have both agreed to do the whole "long Distance" relationship thing for 2 years until she finishes college over there, im 20 and we are doing regular visits to each other every 1-3 months and keeping in touch constantly, as worried as i am she will find someone else she has dont nothing of the sort that should bother me, saying that she is concerned i will find someone else which is just not going to happen i love her to much. ANYWAY
I want to move over to America in 2 years time and am wondering how i go about this, i am willing to get a degree or certain certificate if need be, i do have a full qualification in Furniture Making allowing me to get a job as a carpenter aswell but at the moment im in factory work trying to find myself I want to live with her no matter where she goes and have always wanted to live in America but im so clueless where to start and want to get going as soon as i can, i feel useless just sitting around not doing anything. please help

The best thing you can do is is start now, moving can be pretty pricey and so can moving to a different country so start saving money now. That way when you do move you can have a safety net to have when you move.
As far as everything else, just enjoy the time with your girlfriend, talking and enjoying things when you do actually see her. This is the time for you two to grow independently and as a couple. And right now this is when you really do need to figure things out as in degree. Get a plan together and then start taking measures to accomplish, how ever that may be. Always remember to put your happiness first.

Well you have to apply for a green card. Considering that you have a trade and already speak English this should not be a problem. After five years if you do not marry her or three years if you do you may apply to actually become a citizen. To do this you must take a test and prove that you share American values. As the user above me pointed out it can be pricey so you need to get started.

I am sure your girlfriend can help you with how to come over.
A green card can provide you with a job, perhaps. It also allows you to live here long term. You can not stay here for more than a few weeks without one. Always remember to put your happiness first.

It allows you to stay legally without being a citizen. I am not sure how you would go about getting one, but they will almost certainly check your record.

I'm not sure on this but wouldn't you need to get a working visa to get a job here in the US or would the green card cover that? (until you get citizenship, of course)
I tried looking it up, but I didn't get very far. Hi,
I did some research on applying to be a citizen or getting a green card. Here is a link to the U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Services webstie. The site tells you how to apply for a green card or for citizenship. It says that if you are married to a U.S. citizen, you can gain citizen ship within three years and if unmarried five years. The link is: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/usc...00082ca60aRCRD I hope this helps and if you ever need anything, you can PM me and I'll be glad to help. Let us know how things turn out for the both of you.
