Degrassi Next Class - July 4th 2016, 10:11 PM

This thread has been labeled as containing spoilers. The contents of this thread might therefore describe important elements of a storyline that could ruin it for you. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I'm 23 and watched through about Seasons 9/10 of Degrassi the Next Generation and heard about Degrassi Next Class coming, but wasn't really that excited. Well, last night, I ended up binge watching the entire Season 1 on Netflix and oh my god.

I actually really enjoyed it.

Without too many spoilers, I felt the season was a lot more subtle than Degrassi the Next Generation. The old show, honestly, went over the top a lot. The plots had to "go there" (wasn't that the slogan for a while?) and were usually unnecessarily triggering or violent. Which I didn't hate at the time, but looking back, they were pretty unrealistic. But in Next Class, I felt the characters were cute and generally believable and not just stereotypes, the plots were interesting, and I did enjoy the outright feminist propaganda (as a killjoy feminist myself ).

My #1 complaint, surprisingly, is how rich most of the characters are, which made some of the plots a bit eh. I felt Next Generation had a better class distribution, like, people of multiple socioeconomic backgrounds. But I think that's because (in Degrassi style) the show somewhat centers around 1-2 main families and then has other characters, and the main family are the Hollingsworth kids, who are rich. This makes many of their direct friends also of higher socioeconomic status. So I don't think it's purposeful, but it bugged me after a while. But that may change after other characters get larger roles as the show goes on.

Any other thoughts from you all? Season 2 comes on in three weeks and I'll definitely be watching.

I stopped watching regularly sometime after Emma got married, maybe sooner? I can't remember. I absolutely could not stand the last few seasons and felt it should have been ended a lot sooner. I actually REALLY like Next Class, although I wish it had totally started over rather than somewhat continuing where TNG left off (although, by the end they had dropped the TNG part of the title).

My biggest thing is that they're getting to the point where Emma's little brother Jack should be entering the school and they totally can't just ignore him because his father is the principal.

I've been a huge fan since Degrassi Junior High/High etc. I have rewatched the next generation a few times. I also binged watched Next Class and I absolutely love it! I started rewatching the season to get ready for the season 2. I am so happy that netflix picked up the series

I stopped watching years ago. I don't even remember what season I stopped at. I caught some newer episodes on youtube. It's interesting they're still running this show. I thought Next Generation went on too long.

I might consider watching this at some point. But, I don't have netflix.

They should have ended it at Emma and that class's graduation, TBH. Sure, some of the characters after that (Darcie? Etc) were interesting, but the show kinda went downhill after that. They could have started a new series then. The old characters, at some point, got old.

But you're right about Jack. I think they might do it, as Mr. Simpson is still around. Random teachers are still around. They'll remember the character, I hope.

This! And yet... I disagree about having the show center around Jack.

I mean, has anyone from DTNG has a child yet? I'm sure. I think it'd be pretty damn cool if Liberty/JT's kid appeared at Degrassi Community School! Then it's the perfect plot for drama all around, especially for Liberty. I mean, I hated the drama amongst adults when Emma was a student, but we care more about those students from the early days of DTNG who are now adults.

Just my opinion.
