Empire and Bipolar Disorder - April 5th 2017, 04:00 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Not sure if this is appropriate but does anyone watch the show Empire? I'm doing my final project in my visual culture class and I want to include misconceptions of mental illness in the visual media and I've been watching Empire so I wanted to include the portrayal of Andre's bipolar disorder. Since I don't experience bipolar disorder, my question is, is his character a more or less accurate representation of bipolar disorder? My guess is that not really, but I just want to make sure.
And if there's any other film or television or any other visual media that has representation of mental illness, good or bad, recommend them!

I haven't actually watched Empire, but I have always wanted to.

I had to do a project on mental health before as well and we did it on the movie called "Benny & Joon". It's about schizophrenia and stars Johnny Depp. You should definitely check it out

Haven't watched Empire but it actually sounds interesting.

'Perception' may also be worth watching. Its a show about a professor whos paranoid shizophrenic and gelps a friend to solve crimes that involve mental health issues as hes an expert.

Re: Empire and Bipolar Disorder - April 5th 2017, 08:44 AM

I have watched Empire though not recently, nor this current season. I don't have bipolar either so can't really say for sure whether Andre does represent an accurate depiction of bipolar. That said he does have a mixture of highs and lows, and I think his grandmother had bipolar too, which makes sense because it can run in families. And I liked how they portrayed the stigma where his family didn't want to acknowledge that he had bipolar and that he got disowned by them at one point (I think, I can't remember).

Fight Club was an interesting film portraying mental health issues, though in quite an abstract way. Room is another good film which kind of deals with abuse and being reintegrated into the real world.
