New Girl - December 22nd 2011, 10:50 PM

Who's absolutely in love with New Girl, with Zooey Deschanel? I fricking love it! I love Nick/Jess, but don't think they should get together just yet. They should wait a year or two, like they did Ross and Rachel, but not end it like Ross and Rachel.

Does anyone find it humorless? I do, but I still enjoy it!

It has its moments. I love all the dialogue and characters...except for Jess. Her character just annoys me
Yet, at the same time, it wouldn't be as good of a show without her character lol

Overall I enjoy it and it makes me smile at least once in each episode.

So you have gray hair and you're only 26

that's just another reason I love you...

I love this show. Some episodes are funnier than others, but I really enjoy watching it. Schmidt is hilarious, and Nick/Jess make me smile.

Saw the first episode last night, it's cute and endearing. Not convinced it's funny, but it's certainly adorable.

I like New Girl. I pretty much started watching it just because Zooey Deschanel is in it, but then I started to really like it. Jess is so different.

Same here, Zooey Deschanel is the reason I began watching it!

Re: New Girl - December 26th 2011, 03:59 AM

Meh, not interested in watching Zooey Dechanel play every Zooey Dechanel character ever.

I can only watch 10 minutes of "Oh I'm so random, quirky and zany that I do things like dance in public. I'm so full of whimsy I'm just going to shout out in the middle of a crowded building... because I can! I love living in the moment and I do 'weird' things like talk to plants!! I'M SO AWKWARD I CAN'T GET A MAN EVEN THOUGH I LOOK LIKE A SUPERMODEL LOLS" before I start contemplating suicide.

Seriously though, Zooey Dechanel characters (and others, say Natalie Portman in Garden State... or Kirsten Dunst in Elizabethtown) really represent a massive step back for female characters in movies and tv for me. Once upon a time we had ditzy, dumb blonde girls who needed a man to do everything for them. Then we had a bit of variety including some strong, smart, independent female characters. Now we have characters who think it's cute to be immature, act like socially unaware toddlers, and just generally not behave like adult women. To be fair they don't need a man though... the men actually need them to show them the real meaning of life... to stop caring about what people think of them, to ditch there boring, meaningless, soul crushing 9-5 jobs and to show them that it's totally a-okay to act like 8 year olds on acid!

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget

Damn, way to beat me to the punch with this one. I echo this 110%, though. Zooey Deschanel annoys the living hell out of me. I've watched too many decent movies ruined by the characters she plays.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

I'm not dissing on the show, but I'm so glad someone else finally agreed they don't like Zooey's characters. I've seen a couple movies I like with her in it, but even for this show's tone...it's annoying! Ah well, I still watch it so I can't complain

I agree with y'all about Zooey's character. I like the dark, cynical characters she's played in the past. As awful as it sounds, I hope Jess goes through a trauma and turns into one of her past characters with all the dark sarcasm.

I know the show's supposed to be light-hearted, but the writers could always change that. What shows in the past hasn't been dramatically changed from its original premise?

Zooey always plays the manic pixie dream girl role, which is described as an "idea" more than a person, for brooding young men to fall in love with her, which always happens. It usually works for me as well I love her in Hitchhiker's Guide, 500 Days of Summer, Bridge to Terabithia, Yes Man...and she pretty much plays the same role in all of them haha. It's kinda like Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim as well, though she's infinitely more badass.

I love it and I love Zooey Dechanel. I get that she does tend to play the similar character in most movies but I still love her and the characters she plays.

I watched the first episode and thought it was alright, not really something I'd keep up with religiously like other shows I watched.

I'm not a huge fan of Zooey Dechannel either, it annoys me that most guys seem to love her and think she's this amazing person.

Re: New Girl - December 26th 2011, 08:05 PM

I think it's the similarity to Katy Perry. Like one of five hits for Zooey is Katy (or vice versa) when you're searching for images. So guys are all "Zooey's hot, she's great!" when it's really Katy they're talking about. The big difference is boobs. The next big difference is hair, but Katy keeps hers dark.

Anyways, I'm trying to write a dark New Girl fic, but I have no idea how to start!

Zooey is so much more beautiful than Katy!

I agree, Zooey is more beautiful in a classy way. Katy used to be pretty when she still used Hudson for her surname. Now, not really. She's too glamorous.

Emily, however, is hot in a more adult way. Zooey's just that young teenage girl next door with the cute looks.

Seriously... I am the only one who found Yes Man really creepy? He looked old enough to be her father.

And I actually really like 500 Days Of Summer. But I think the quirkyness is toned down a bit. To be fair, Zooey (or Summer) was kind of only a MPDG in Tom's head.

I don't understand why producers and writers feel the need to take MPDG's to such extremes. Why can you not have a girl who is a 'free spirit' and maybe a little quirky without coming off like she has a severe intellectual disability?
