Question NEW We Didn't Start The Fire - October 24th 2015, 12:34 AM

So there's this song called "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel and it was written in the late 1980s and I think the most recent events listed are Sally Ride, Tienanmen Square, Cola Wars and the Reagan Administration. They're all 80s I think. I want to write a parody or updated version that goes from 1990 - 2015 but I was born in 2000 so I'm missing 10 years of notable history. I used wikipedia but it's too specific! If anyone can think of any events or people or cultural stuff that happened in the 90s and 2000s, post it below! That'd be appreciated!

I know that song. I have a very vague memory of news on Tienanmen Square, as I was four then.

Some off the top of my head are

World Trade Center bombing (February 1993) and/or Oklahoma City Bombing (I want to say that was 1996)... so you could just say bombings and it will refer to both.
Clinton Administration, 1993-2001... you could mention something about Monica Lewinsky.
Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech. (Basically, school shootings. like, you could say "nightmare on campus" or something)
9/11... "Planes into towers" or something, but that might be too jarring. I don't know, really.
Iraq and Afghanistan.

You could group it up from like September 2001 through March 2003 like Billy Joel does in some parts of the song. Remember, you can't use 'terror on the airlines' which sucks, pretty much.

Like, for instance.

Planes going down
War on Terror
Afghanistan, Iraq

Other things that were significant were Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.

Of course, these are all relevant to the US.

- Maybe something about gay marriage being legalised? Quite a few countries have made it legal in the last few years.

- Russia's invasion of Ukraine was also another big event.

- You could possibly include something about the internet and memes and how that's changed our behaviours e.g cyberbullying, nude leaks (The Fappening) 4chan etc.

I could list so many events from all over the world that happened during that time period. There's actually a bunch of videos on youtube that are updates that include from like 1990-onwards. You probably could even split it up in like 5-10 year increments and do a couple of songs, or just an extremely long updated version! This sounds like a great idea and I do hope you end up sharing it when you're done. This is 1 of my favorite songs!

I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance. - Garth Brooks

If I was 10 years older this'd be a breeze! But there are always events that slip out of memory so you need a few extra minds to pull it all together
