Black Metal - January 9th 2012, 12:26 AM

Anyone else here enjoy a bit of black metal? Personally I like the shoegazey, post-black metal stuff in honesty, not so much stuff the more traditional stuff like Burzum.
Right now I'm enjoying a mix of Deafheaven, Woods of Desolation, Wolves in the Throne Room and An Autumn For Crippled Children. Starting to enjoy a few other bands too.

Two favourite songs right now:

Woods of Desolation - Darker Days
Deafheaven - Language Games

I thought about you for the rest of the day.
Catching my head turning to find you again.
I hated myself for it.

I am a fan of a lot of music, but this is one corner of the musical world I have not explored enough. I will definitely be checking out these bands now. :P

The black metal genre and community has always been too mental for me to try and crack. Either it's full of right-wing extremists or internet trolls who use kvlt every second sentence. The typically very low production value just goes against everyting I enjoy in an album (such as the sharpness of something so overblown like a Nightwish album), and it all just goes together to make a very unenjoyable listening experience.

However, I've been told many times to listen to Wolves in the Throne Room, and Pitchfork's top 50 metal albums of 2011 were mostly from the black metal world, so maybe it's time for another shot...

I like a lot of different music too. Never been heavily into Metal, but have stuff from Black Sabbath, Metallica, AC/DC, Slayer and a few more.. only individual cuts, no full albums, and mostly older stuff.

Why is it called "Black Metal?"

I just added Solitude Part III, by Woods of Desolation off the Darkest Days album. I like it...great cut playing in background for homework.

Checked out Candlemass a little... didn't like much of it.

Thanks for the post Matthew!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself! Of course this is as much as a stereotype as anything else, but it really is true more often than not.
I'm a hair metal fan, and some how beyond my comprehension, have become part of the 'metal' group at my school. They're all into death and black metal, and have tried to show me some bands of those genres. It's not particularly my thing, but what really gets me is their attitudes. My one former friend and I don't even talk because of how much of an elitist he is. I just can't stand him anymore.

My ultimate person problem though, is the amount of black & death metal fans who have zero appreciation for hair & 80s speed metal. You know, the bands from which the black metal artist's are influenced.
Although most black metal bands pay thanks to bands such as The Scorpions, so many of the BM fans diss and degrade the original metal bands. It sickens me, their bands wouldn't be anywhere without the ones I listen to.

"Obsession" would be an insulting understatement.

Re: Black Metal - January 28th 2012, 06:41 PM

I'm not a fan, mainly because of the sound. Shrieking, treble-heavy, lo-fi music just doesn't do it for me. I prefer my metal bass-heavy and thunderous. There's a few interesting bands that started off as black metal and went avant-garde, or that incorporate black metal influences without adopting the entire sound; Ulver, Arcturus, Agalloch, etc; but I can't even listen to most regular black metal. Dark Funeral aren't bad, though.

It's named after Venom's second album, Black Metal. They weren't a black metal band, exactly, but they were a big influence on early black metal bands like Mayhem.

Oh, and Cosmo: you seem like the sort of person whose ears would prick up at the words "Japanese avant-garde black metal". So assuming you haven't already, check out Sigh.
