Music: Downloads vs. The CD - January 16th 2009, 10:33 AM

Which do you prefer, and why? Where do you get the majority of your music from?

I prefer CDs, because I like having hard copies of all my music and I love looking at the lyric booklets that come with. I also buy the bulk of my music secondhand, from used bookstores--they're way cheaper and sometimes you can get lucky and find a really rare album for next to nothing.
My computer isn't fast enough to download anything (I have dial-up). I've downloaded just two songs, both from Wal-Mart because I had coupons for free songs.

((Not sure if this belongs in Entertainment or Technology, sorry!))

I prefer CDs due to their superior sound quality and the fact that when i buy an album, i actually have something i can hold in my hand rather than just stare at on a screen.

I do like CD's for all reasons above. But to be honest, i don't go out too much and i never go to town just to buy one thing, a CD. Usually i just download. Sometimes im lucky enough to get a digital booklet with it, and thats it really. Just quicker.

If i see a bargain when im out ill get it though.

Audio CD

With an audio CD you can:
  • Rip to any format you like
  • Rip to any from a set list of bitrates from uncompressed to 32kbps
  • Rip as many times as you like on as many computers as you like
  • Listen offline in a standard CD player

C.Ds all the way! I rarely download tracks, unless they are rarities that you cannot obtain anywhere else, or B-sides that i really want and i don't wish to purchase the singles as i already have the full album.

CD's. I don't do well with downloading, I always manage to screw it up plus if my comp breaks I always have a back up. CD's are worth the few extra quid. I do download singles when I can't wait for the album to come out aswell.

Downloading, it's so, so much quicker and I don't have to purchase a whole album. I mainly do it because it's more convenient for me as I download them straight off itunes on my ipod, so I don't even have to plug it into the computer.

However, if i'm in love with a band/singer I will buy their music on CD, as I like to look through the booklet and what have you. The majority of my music are downloads, however all of the music from the artist I listen most to, I have on CD (because I like to have the CD and cover art in my hands, she's very expressive through her CD artwork, and I like to appreciate that, too).

CDs definatly. Though I am guilty of downloading, and quite often. When I have the money, I do by CDs rather than downloading but the economy is too bad right now to be worry about spending money on CDs and other unessential things.

I like CDs better. When your computer crashes with all your downloaded songs, it's a bit depressing, especially after you've downloaded over a hundred. CDs get you more in touch with the artist and you get to listen to their non-singles, which are sometimes the best songs. (:

I like CDs alot better. From what i know, downlaoding music doesn't really benefit the artists who created it. And I agree with other people here it's good to have a copy of the CD in hand.

Forgot to mention this, and it's one of my major reasons for getting CDs. It really annoys me when I'm playing with someone's mp3 player and get all excited that they have my favorite band...only to discover that all they have are the singles. There's so much more to an album, and I know that I'd only download the singles rather than risk paying 99 cents for a crap song.

Although, you could arguably say the same about CDs I suppose...

CDs definitely! I agree with most of what's already been mentioned. I'll download a random song here and there if I'm not really a fan of the artist, but like a certain single. Downloading is just so... impersonal and you don't get the same connection to the artist/band.

I love CDs but I can't really afford them, so I only buy CDs that are really special, if that makes sense?
Also I have a record player which I inherited from my Great-uncle and I love it, the sound quality isn't amazing on vinyl but I love all my old records (I have originals from when my dad was a kid)
But downloads are good for my iPod and I love having all my music with me wherever I go.
So I like both... plus vinyl records lol

I really can't pick. Downloading is much more convenient for me because I rarely have my own spending money, whereas on iTunes I have a $10 per month allowance. It's also relatively cheaper than buying the CD in a store - most CDs on iTunes are $10 whereas in the stores there 50% - 150% more expensive.

However, I like collecting CDs and having the hard copy of it. Most of my CDs are by artists I LOVE, and the downloads are merely for bands I've just recently started getting into.

CDs all the way! You can rip 'em to any format you like, you get the album art and anything else the band includes in the insert, and most of the bands I listen to require you to listen to the full CD as a whole to get the most out of them.

I like CDs, because then I have a hard copy and I can do what I want with it. I also don't have all of that music clogging up my hard drive on my computer. With that being said though, I haven't bought a CD in forever because everyone keeps giving me iTunes giftcards.

Seeing how I only listen to music on my computer, downloads.
But I don't download anything, I take it from people.

Any CDs that people let me borrow, I put onto my hard drive, and then give back to them.

If I can find the CD I'm looking for I'll buy it. But, I'm not about to buy a cd just because I liked one song on the radio from an artist I don't listen to.

I buy CD's like most people above said. Much better sound quality and I like to support the artist for making good music

The only thing I don't like is when there's only 1-3 songs on a CD I like so it wouldn't be worth buying the whole CD just for those few songs, then I guess I might download those few.

I personally like using both of those, downloading and CD's.
Because I use iTunes for my iPod, and you can download the music or upload a CD onto your computer and put that on your iPod. I uploaded a CD onto iTunes during Christmas time when I got a couple CD's for Christmas. So really both are useful.

I like having the CD. I like having the booklet that comes with it and being able to put the real thing in a cd rack. I never download songs.

I like downloading. It's much faster than going out and buying the CD. But I will buy CDs occasionally just because I want the lyric books inside.

I like cds because I have an odd obsession with the booklets that has the lyrics and "___ Thanks..." sections in them. haha.

But i'd prefer music downloads because I can just put it on my ipod and listen to stuff instead of carrying around 50 different cds.

3/4 of my music is downloaded.
