Controlling one computer from another (in a non-hacking way.) - April 19th 2009, 04:03 PM

Hey guys,

Basically back in October I got myself a new laptop to replace my old computer and which I now use all the time- however, I still have the old computer and use it to store all the excess files I don't really need. However, I need them now and would rather not have to go over to it (upstairs/downstairs) and transfer them one by one. (I only have a 1GB Mem Stick, and most these files are 600mb in size)

Now, both my laptop and computer are hooked up to the same internet router- my Laptop wirelessly and my computer with wires. What I'm asking, is there anyway I can use them being on the same internet to log on to the other computer while it's on and cut/paste files over from it to my laptop?

(Edit: Just to avoid confusion, I'm on Vista.)

There's a website called LogMeIn that lets you get your other computer screen up on the computer you're using along with files and programmes too. I used it a while back before my computer got wiped. You'll have to google it to find more out about it because I can't remember how it works, I think it has something to do with the IP address.

There are plenty of programs that can do this - search for remote access. The only problem is that you'd need to leav the old pc on 24/7 (you can't remotely turn pc's on)

Let me get this straight...your have a pc wired to a router, laptop wireless on same router...why not just file share on your local network?

A lot less hassle than remote access...

Because I have no idea how to do that? Ergo the point of the thread :P

I'll have a look at Remote Access and that LogMeIn site looks pretty damned useful too. Thanks for the help guys

Don't use Log me in!!! They gather IP addresses! Just use a program called Ultra VNC! It's free and very easy to set up, I use it via a VPN to control my servers via the internet.
