What's your internet speed? - May 2nd 2014, 04:06 PM

We finally have decent internet in my village so I've been streaming everything in HD today

It was at 3-5mb/s before. I just want to know if this speed is actually good or if I'm just so used to crappy internet I think it is :')

Over 2 times better download than mind, and around 8x better upload than mine, lawl.

Nice, very nice. This is some good speed, your streams should work up perfectly.

Sky just recently took over my old ISP (Be Unlimited) and since that's happened my internet has been crappy...used to have 18mb/s download speed so it's pretty much had a 50% reduction

I'm moving house soon though and switching to a new company so I look forward to seeing my speeds increase then

Re: What's your internet speed? - May 2nd 2014, 05:27 PM

I was on TalkTalk before Sky which were completely useless. At one point my internet speed was at something like 0.3mb/s (I could JUST load Facebook and TH) and they wouldn't do piss all to fix it. We then switched to Sky and they fixed it straight away (we weren't syncing properly for some reason)

My boyfriend's annoyed Our village is MUCH smaller than the town he lives in (which is like 6-7 miles away) and they still haven't got fibre optic.

As a general rule, Internet speeds in Ireland are atrocious, so this isn't bad at all.

I'm actually surprised at how good my upload speed is I don't even upload much so I can't really use it to its full advantage What does Ping mean btw?

To simplify networking jargon, it essentially defines how quickly your computer communicates with a server. I'm not an expert in a field, but I think how your ping turns out depends as much on the host computer as your own. So, your ping could vary depending on what you access.

For example, my computer had the best ping with the server in Cork for the speed test, even though I'm within a couple of miles of the server hosted in Limerick. The server closest to you won't necessarily have the best ping, it depends on other factors.

Ping: 34 ms
Download Speed: 2.81 Mbps
Upload Speed: 2.30 Mbps

This is only the internet speed for when I'm up at college. The internet speed back home is a lot faster then this.

Re: What's your internet speed? - May 7th 2014, 04:04 PM

OH what would i give to have speeds like boobies has... All the crap i could do... *nerdgasm*
Im using a VPN currently but id say its 10Mbp/s download and 0.6-0-7Mbp/s upload. What would i give for a 10 mbp/s upload (in my home)...
Also Gareth thumbs up for the explanation. Can be easier tho (or at least paraphrased): Ping is a value measured in miliseconds that determines how long your computer needs to communicate with the server. The farther the server, the bigger the ping.
There are other factors here but im guessing you dont really know what is a TCP/IP protocol anyways so Im guessing the explanation above is the easiest one.

Re: What's your internet speed? - May 7th 2014, 10:14 PM

For some weird reason it connected to a server in Douglas which is over 200 miles away, and across the water.
Not that I understand it, but it says:
Quote:
Ping 43ms
Download Speed 6.76Mbps
Upload Speed 0.93Mbps
So what does that mean?

So what does that mean?
I already explained what a ping is, and the download and upload is self explanatory. The speeds are measured in bits, not bytes. To see what your byte per second speed is, you need to divide the bit speed with the number 8 since one byte is 8bits. So if your internet speed is 10mbps (megaBITSpersecond), your MB/S (megabytes per second) is 10/8=1.25MB/s. If you downloaded a movie, you will download it at 1.25MB/s. If the movie is 700mb, it would need you 560 seconds or 9.33 minutes. Internet providers use megaBITS per second so the people would think its megabytes and buy better internet speed. same with upload.
You understand now Llama?

Download: .56 Mbps
Upload: .51 Mbps
Ping: 73 ms

I think this means that my internet is really bad. Not surprising.

Re: What's your internet speed? - May 9th 2014, 09:59 AM

Well thats freakin weird.
You pay for internet service, right? You have a router and an internet connection? And you have 0.56 download and 0.51 upload? Are you using a proxy/VPN? Maybe thats slowing the internet connection. Clear all obstacles and try again. I had simmilar problems, the problem was that my internet provider had some problems and they didnt want to call me to say that they fucked up my connection. After some shouting and threatning my internet was normal again...
You are using speedtest.net for testing right? Some other testers get confused if youre downloading or uploading somethig via a torrent or a normal PTP connection...
