A device that saves the computer's history? - May 18th 2009, 10:44 PM

Isn't there some kind of device that you can hook to a computer somehow that will save the history even if someone goes to the internet browser and deletes it? If there is, what is it called and where can you get one?

Edit- I guess a little more information about why I'm asking will help you know what I'm talking about. A friend of mine has a history of talking to strange people on the internet and running away with them, so her dad wants to be able to keep the history on the computer to see what she's been on, but it needs to be so that she doesn't know how to delete it.

Seems to be a bit of software on the internet that can do that, but I'm not sure that they're very trustworthy. But it does seem doable, I think there's a way to tag the pages she visits.

Yeah... I just need to know of something because I'm supposed to get back to her dad about it. She's my cousin, a few years younger than me. And she's in some type of detention center right now, but she'll be getting out soon. He wants to be able to let her use the computer, but he also wants to be able to see what she gets on.

I'm not sure about this. But an alternative would be to put parental controls on, with some sort of awesomely impossible to figure out password.

Do you mean sort of some kind of spy type software?
I have no idea what's reliable and would not install spyware and viruses and all that, but there are a lot of things out there you could look into. For one, I found this online: http://www.spectorsoft.com/spysoftware.asp?refer=12233 Maybe something like that? Judging by the rating and the price, I'd assume there's nothing harmful that would happen to the computer if it was installed.

Thanks. I'll see what he says about that. It looks pretty good to me as long as it's real and not a scam or anything. Anyone know how reliable it is?

Depending on Software/hardware used, this can be done in several ways.

Some routers store all information from sites you visit, chats you have etc etc for police purposes.

ISP's in the UK are legally obligated to keep ALL internet data for their users for a set time, dont know how this is in the US.

Also, some ISP's have parental controls so parents can easily monitor what is going on (Although its super easy to get around these with the most minimal of technical knowledge)

Can make the history save into a Read-Only folder on your computer somewhere.

I also know that the Police here in the UK have software/Hardware that retreive history from computers no matter how sure you are you deleted it, or fried your hard drive etc etc. This is used to catch Paedophile and the like...as to having a public version available, im not so sure but something that is worth investigating none the less.

Asking on a more dedicated IT forum will give you what you are looking for no doubt, but this is the best i can come up with for now.

forums.techguy.org is a decent place, but there are others.

Data recovery is far from an exact science. Someone with enough time and enough reason to want to destroy data can easily destroy data beyond any hope of recovery.

As for the original topic, that Spector software seems legitimate. Amazon.com is selling it for $79.99 USD.

Thanks. I created a thread about it there as well, but it got closed after a couple of replies because they were saying that they don't know what my "real intent" is. Alrighty then...

But anyway, I think I found my answer. Thank you all. =]

Uch, yeah, alot of tech specialist forums tend to be full of arrogant arseholes in my humble opinion...
