MSN 2009 makes me a sad panda... - July 15th 2009, 05:47 PM

A long overdue thread...
I managed to accidentally upgrade (don't ask) to MSN 2009 and..."seriously, wtf?" was my reaction.
I mean, honestly, I know it's microsoft and all and they seem to be adamant on dumbing down interfaces to dur-dur levels, but at the price of functionality?? I mean what the hell? It's like the decided to reasearch what the ugliest and most obnoxious design blasphemies they could commit and decided to go commit them with all the happy-go-lucky-ism of someone trying to carve out michaelangelo's David using nothing but a sledgehammar...
They actually made it so webcams can't go large size...I mean WHY???? Is there even ONE reason for that?? It doesn't even have to be a good one, just a reason..

And the design...what the hell...it's like the nauseasly childish interface couldn't get any worse at the last version of MSN, but na...Microsoft just had to prove me wrong.
And what happened to customisation? You used to be able to decide what colour the interface would be, but no, not now. Now they only pretend to let you decide what colour it. For example I tell it to be black and it makes the edges of the thing black so everything just manages to look even uglier.
I mean what were you THINKING!?!
Gah...So I've downgraded, and what a hassle that was. I had to get a peice of third party software called ZapMessenger to pull it off and then find a site that had the .msi file for the installation of the previous version on it.
I can't remember the exact site where I got it, but I'm sure I could find it again if anyone is suffering similar frustrations...

Anyways, opinions people?

Hiya Janos,

So i'm definitely with you 100%. I don't like the MSN 2009. It's so dumb. The customasations they supposedly allow you to do. I'm always having to try to change it. I don't like it at all.

I haven't taken the time to downgrade, but it sounds like a hassle so I'll probably be living with it for a while, or until they fix it!

Take care,

Thing is though, I don't think they're gonna fix it. I mean think of it, if they actually listened to feedback, wouldn't it be getting better with each new release rather than worse?
It is a wee bit of a hassle, but it's worth it in the end,
1) Uninstall messenger the normal way by going to Add or Remove programs and Windows Essentials and it'll come up with the option to remove messenger.
2)Download ZapMessenger and run it, no install required.
3) Get the standalone installer for Windows Live Messenger 8.5 from here
4)Do a victory jig (optional)

It's just a free IM service, I mean, come on, it's ok.. sorta.

You could resize the webcam before?

I don't know, I just went from regular Windows Messenger that came with Windows XP/Vista and then shot up to Windows Live Messenger.. Is that even the same thing?

I know I know...its just well, why make it worse? And why then make it worse *again*? It just frustrates me how despite the majority opinion (acquired via a quick google search anyways), Microsoft still ignore the feedback of their userbase and proceed to make it worse with each new iteration...

No wonder more people are going Apple every day...

I don't mind the new one to be honest. I use msgpluslive anyway to customise is, but at the end of the day, the core functions that I use are still easily available and I don't really care about the rest. I only have WLM there for the sake of having it, I don't actually use it much.

I guess I'm just a bit of an IM whore ^^;
It's just this time around they started removing features which really irked me. I customise mine via liveplus as well, it's still more limited than the last one, which just isn't right .

First off, Microsoft doesn't give a damm if people will no longer buy PC's, as MS does not make PC's, only the operating system, which in turn other companies make their own brand of PCs and pre-install Windows XP/Vista before the computer is sold to a customer or a reseller. Secondly, MS owns a considerable percentage when it comes to Mac sales, as people still purchase Microsoft products to use on their Mac, it's really funny.

I just found out that there is a Messenger for Mac, made by Microsoft, comes with the Office for Mac 2008 package, with all of your favorite MS Office applications. =]

Is it too late to say that that part was meant in a sardonic tone? ^^; I was kinda just making a joke at the whole pc. vs. mac thing going on, but now that I read it again, I see what you're meaning, that's not exactly clear from the way I said it. My bad ^^;

Hm, that's weird, it did it for me in a few moments. Did you uninstall it completely through add/remove programs first, yeah?
It might have just been a random error on zapmessenger's part, so give it another try and tell me what happens =).

I downloaded mine without using the zapmessenger thing, and it worked fine.

Ugh I hate the new MSN. I downloaded it, was on it for about 10 minutes then decided that it was awful and went back to the other, more nicer MSN.
My sister was going to download it and I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It's so ugly. Why oh why?

Hm..I think I just worked out something.
zapmessenger is only needed if you're having trouble completely getting ridding of MSN or if you're having trouble persuading MSN not to automatically try and update itself, which I was, hence I recommended doing that without thinking. My bad people . I'm guessing you'll only need to carry out that step if you can't seem to install the older version.

I don't remember what the old one was like. xD I do miss being able to enlarge the webcam sessions and such. I don't HATE it though.

Your description of WLM is hilarious, Janos. I'm sorry, though, that it wasn't what you had expected.

I can say that I, too, was a little disappointed when I installed the new WLM. My main issue, though, is the fact that you can't change the way your own window looks. I don't like the fact that you're stuck using the setting other people like. Or, at least, I haven't found an option that lets you keep your own.

The webcam thing isn't really that huge of a deal to me. I have, however, gotten used to it all now. So, I can't say I hate it all.

...aaaand that's why I'm enjoying Pidgin. Granted it's not that pretty either and doesn't have all the bells and whistles that MSN has, but it's functional and I can talk to people on MyspaceIM, AIM, and MSN at the same time.

I'd sing you a song, but I'm feeling quite off

Re: MSN 2009 makes me a sad panda... - July 16th 2009, 01:20 PM

Does anyone have Windows Live Messenger and also have a Xbox 360 controller that they use on their Windows XP/Vista?

I updated to WLM when I first got my Windows Vista Laptop, 2 months later I decided to get the Xbox 360 controller, and now I'm getting a huge Windows Live Messenger Update popup, asking me if I want to update to the latest version of WLM.

I'm like... 'Huh?'

Why would WLM want to update itself after I plug in my Xbxo 360 controller? HUGE LOL
