Looking for the Best RPG - February 28th 2010, 09:53 PM

I'm a very, very casual gamer (I prefer movies and books to games really) but I'm looking for something interactive, with a great story, and great character development.

My husband wants to get me a video game, so I want to choose one I'll actually enjoy.

My favourite game of all time was the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I liked the 3rd person perspective, the style of game play wasn't too difficult, and the story and cinematics were awesome.

I also enjoyed Kingdom Hearts One and Two, although the repetitive fighting got very annoying.

Anyone know of any games for pc, xbox, 360, ps2, or gamecube that would work?

Thanks

Elderscrolls IV. Oblivion. is an awesome RPG that has so much content it is impossible to 100% complete it.

My husband tried it. He doesn't like open-ended games. He wants a game that's most like a movie, IE: Kingdom Hearts, KotOR, Force Unleashed, etc.

And.. ES 4 easy? even on the easiest setting, a n00b gets creamed fast... (i.e. Me first-time.. )

He also dislikes Fallout, and Lost Oddysey, so I'm sure Final Fantasy is out of the question, too.

Try KoToR2, its a decent sequel, even if you can tell that the studio ran out of time at a certain point in the game and had to rush the ending.

Also, Dragon Age: Origins is a beautiful game . Get it on PC if yours is powerful enough, if not, 360. Trust me, you'll love it =)

I played KoTOR 2, and hated it. The story was a joke compared to the original, and made little sense. And everyone died at the end. WHAT WAS THAT? Anyways, I thinking of trying Dragonage.

Disgaea! The tactics-style combat is very easy to learn, and the story is absolutely insane. I had a blast playing it.

If turn-based combat doesn't turn you off, many of the older final fantasy games are good; I'd probably reccommend IX and VII if the graphics don't bother you. IX especially mixes fun gameplay with a touching storyline.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

I'll probably get laughed at for my suggestions, mainly because I'm known for playing off the wall, not very well known, and not the highest rated video games. But these are some that I've really enjoyed. (Plus its been years since I've really played many games, so these are pretty old.... hehe. Forgive me for being a noob ) These are all ps2 btw.

Grandia II - I loved the story line and character development. It just takes a couple hours of gameplay to really get into it.

Wild Arms: Alter Code F - remake of, in my opinion, the best game ever.

Shadow Hearts Covenant - second in the series and much better than the first. Unfortunately the original Shadow Hearts was really good, but had the worst ending I've ever seen in a video game. The way the combat is set up is very interesting and different too.

Probably Dragon Age if not Oblivion. I've not played it, but that's likely your best best. I've only heard praise of it.

Oblivion
Dragon Age: Origins
Divinity: Ego Draconis (HIGHLY recommend this one)

All available on Xbox 360 and PC as far as I'm aware. I think the first 2 are also on PS3.

Well the latest Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed games have very fun gameplay and great stories and character development but both are awaiting sequels so if you just want a start to finish game then maybe... zelda?
Oh yeah, if you want great story then look into "Tales of ____" (Symphonia, Abyss, ...). I would personally recommend Abyss. It's a bit older (so cheaper), great story, and more involving/awesome battles than final fantasy. You can check out any gameplay video to see what I mean.

I'm curious as to why he's interested in RPG and yet he's not interested in Oblivion. Fallout 3 sucks donkey dick, but Oblivion is the best RPG I have ever played...and I hate that kind of stuff. Fable 2 was pretty cool, but it's too easy and it's a breeze to go through the game. Only thing I'd recommend is Oblivion. If he doesn't like it....TRY IT AGAIN, lol.

My husband doesn't like Oblivion because it's too hard for him. He wants a game that will be almost as easy as reading a book. He liked Kingdom Hearts 2 better than the first, and he hated Oblivion. He was bored before he came out of the sewers.

I was going to recommend Oblivion too, but according to my friends Fable is somewhat like Oblivion except with more a plotline to follow.

My husband played and beat Fable 2 with all the DLCs. He hated the non-stop fighting, and all the property trading there seemed to need to be. he just played straight through the story and that was it.

Thanks all! That's a good list. I'm definitely going to try a few of these. Divinity Ego Draconis, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Disgaea, and Dragon Age Origins look really good.
