Physical Memory Dump error (Blue Screen) - April 8th 2010, 04:55 PM

This has happened to me twice this week :/ It has never happened to me before. A blue screen with white text just randomly pops up and says something along the lines of my computer needed to be turned off to prevent further damage. It had numbers at the bottom and once it hit 100 it resetted itself.

It happened to me on Monday but I was doing loads of stuff at once (on YIM, uploading something to youtube, listening to music and was waiting for something to load) so I thought that was why. All I was doing today was making a thread on another forum I'm on

What does it mean? Is it dangerous? What can I do to stop it from happening?

It's not dangerous, but it's not a good sign (ie it could very well happen again, frequently). It would help if you could tell us what exactly the error code is (something like 0xe553). If the message flashes too quickly to see anything then try doing a search for *.dmp, and attach the file you find.

Also did you install/download anything recently that may have sparked it off?

I can't really remember If it happens again I'll read it quickly and write it down. I haven't installed anything in ages. I've been downloading a few films/albums from torrents :/

OK, do you have an anti-virus? Because if not you might want to install one - even if it isn't a virus, you're bound to come across one eventually from a dodgy torrent. I'd recommend AVG

it may be your RAM going bad, if you have 2-4 sticks of it and one begins to fail, you will see intermittent problems such as this.

I have Avast! Antivirus. My aunt installed it for me after I got a virus last year. So far it has been really good.

Crap, it has happened twice again :/ I keep trying to take a picture of it using my phone but it goes away too quickly .____. The weird thing is after it resets itself it boots up really quickly (quicker than normal anyway)

It could be anything really. Could you go to the C:\Windows\minidump folder (think that's it) and attach one of the files there?

Go to my computer, right-click on your C drive, go to properties, check for errors, then re-start your computer and let it do its job. That just means some files are scrambled where they are not supposed to be and if you run that scan it'll fix it up for you. If it still does that afterwards, you may need to re-format your computer.

Re-install windows, or a better OS ¬.¬

My laptop used to get bluescreen, turned out I had a dodgey hard drive, so really it could be anything causing it.

Not BSOD's, in later Windows OS's they tend to really be symptoms of bigger problems.

Idk if this is any help but it popped up after I reset my computer when I come home. I'm guessing it happened again when I went down my sister's house

Re: Physical Memory Dump error (Blue Screen) - April 13th 2010, 06:44 PM

OK if I'm reading that right then this might be the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=929762&sd=RMVP (a "1394 connection" is a lan cable, like a USB cable with a squarish end - used with external hard drives etc.)

[EDIT] That article in other words: if you've got extra stuff connected to your PC, it enters sleep mode and then wakes up again, then sometimes it doesn't know what to do. Solution - update your PC, either by turning Automatic Updates on or by downloading the attached file.

Otherwise if you give me the model of your PC I could see if it's something related to just that model....
