How can you tell a pirated DVD from a real one? - May 10th 2010, 11:20 AM

I bought a DVD (Hard Candy) from Amazon and I'm pretty sure it's a pirated copy :| I don't really care as it works and if it is a copy it's a bloody good one. The video quality is fine and it works on my DVD player too. I'm just curious. The reason I think it's a copy is because the back cover of the DVD isn't very good quality, it looks photocopied. The picture on the disk looks photocopied too.

If you bought it from Amazon, it won't be pirated; if you bought it from Amazon marketplace it could... be a pirated copy, but its not likely... To be honest your best bet could be to go into a movie rental store, see if you can find an original cover in there, buy from them again and see if the qualities the same, or buy a dvd from a different place but made by the same people and see if its something to do with the publishers

I think I get what you mean, and judging from your description, it does sound pirated to me. I'm thinking get in contact with Amazon and report the seller, since that seller is making money illegally, when you boil it down...

The differences between a pirated DVD and a real one may be easy to spot at times, and difficult at others. Original DVDs tend to be of a better quality and they look more "professional" too, if that makes sense. It'll be hard to determine whether or not a DVD you've ordered online is an original or not, so, to be safe, I'd stick to purchasing from renowned DVD stores if you're heavily opposed to piracy. Just be careful not to be ripped off

I've actually never seen Hard Candy in a shop before, which is why I bought it off Amazon. I was thinking of reporting the guy but right now I'm still unsure. I tried taking a picture of the disk so you could see what I mean but my camera is crappy quality anyway.

Fair enough then, if you couldn't find it in stores

What is the packaging like? Is it the hard plastic "book-cover" kind of packaging you get with DVDs usually, or a flimsy plastic sleeve? Some pirated DVDs come in flimsy plastic sleeve-y packaging. That's a way to keep an eye out for it.

If the cover looks photocopied, have you checked what the paper is like? Most copied DVD covers are on normal paper, not the type of paper used on proper DVDs but if it looks photocopied and the design on the DVD does as well, it most likely is because if it was a proper one, it would look more real not photocopied.

Ahhhhh it feels like normal paper. Nice quality normal paper, but it doesn't feel like the paper on other DVDs :|

I'd say it's most likely a copy then if it's normal paper.

If someone is selling the DVD while it's still in cinemas, it's pirated.

Even if you report the seller, amazon wont really bother doing anything about. Its the same will all online shopping sites.

The film has been out since 2005 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/) so I know the DVD has deff been released.

Definitely sounds like a pirated DVD. I'd report straight away.
