I can't shut down my computer. - May 17th 2010, 09:38 PM

My computer is being a huge jerk lately. Which isn't a surprise, because computers generally seem to hate me.

Here's the deal: When I shut down my computer, it won't turn back on when I try to start it again. It goes to the page where it says starting up, but after it finishes loading it takes me to a dark blue screen that doesn't say anything, and just sits there. So I have to shut off my laptop by using the power button, go into safe mode, open a program, wait a little while, then restart it from there. Sometimes I have to do this more than once to get it to finally work normally again.

I also have a program that keeps popping up saying it needs to install updates for Windows Defender, but I don't even have Windows Defender installed on my computer. McAfee doesn't tell me there's a virus, so I'm really confused.

Help?

first of all I HATE THAT FN VIRUS!!!!!!!!!! ok windoms defender is a virus that installs itself automatically onto your computer in like 6-8 different places. And it works as a key logging program. ( it takes everything you type and sends it to the creator so they can take your passwords, usernames and creditcard numbers if you have entered them when it was installed.) i used this site to help me get rid of it http://cantalktech.com/2010/01/22/wi...defender-2010/ good luck.
P.S look in the start and then run and type windows defender once you followed the site i recommended steps to make sure it is all gone. Then empty your recycle bin.

Erm... Windows defender, not the windows anti virus program? lol... I no longer use windows, buuut microsoft do make a windows defender, will probably have installed itself in the background during an update sometime, as pcs seem to have a habit of doing

Uhm on the est of it though, I'm not sure, but before you go crazy on windows defenders ass, I'd check that its not the microsoft program and is the virus before you start chasing a dead end, no offence Bryan!

Following those directions seemed to work. The program it told me to install found tons of malware on my computer, then told me I needed to restart my computer to remove it all, and it turned back on with no problem, so I think that means everything is okay. Thank you so much!

As tk338 said, Windows Defender is something that comes with Vista and 7, something Microsoft throws in to help fight off spyware. The particular virus/malware/whatever referred to here however, is something that pretends to be it so you'll leave it alone.

Glad to hear you got rid of it though Amanda =).
