Wine - June 5th 2010, 06:59 PM

Has anyone used WINE to install something on a *nix system? I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and am considering two options. Either dual boot with Windows XP or try to get Office 2010 running in WINE (when it comes out) but I'm not quite sure how well wine works. The last time I used it was 2008 and it was the worst decision ever. It crashed my entire system and I didn't backup and it took FOREVER to recover everything with a live CD+external drive, so to say the least, I'm nervous. First, I must back up everything and have a 10.04 CD burnt.

But any suggestions? Have you gotten office 2007 to work? Or should I just dual boot with XP?

But dual booting would really suck because everytime I wanted to use office I'd have to re-boot and I'd probably just start using XP more than ubuntu

And I don't have good enough specs to run a VM.

So, yeah, WINE would be ideal if it would work right!

Firstly, do you NEED office 2010?

You're gonna have to wait to see if it actually works with Wine first, if not there'll be a wait while they figure things out.

And Office 2008 is Mac-only, so no wonder it didn't work...

No, what I meant was the last time I used WINE was in year 2008 with Ubuntu 8.10

lol

And I think I do. Open Office doesn't do the formatting conversion between OO and MsOffice very well. Everything gets messed up, and I prefer working with Office.

Maybe if I could convince more people to switch to Open Office... then I wouldn't need to worry about it! :P

Or ask them to save in older formats? I've never had any problems with conversions, but then again I've never had to deal with the newer file formats (well once just after Vista was released, but OO wouldn't read them back then so I had to figure out the format myself fun...)
