Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Released - February 22nd 2011, 11:28 PM

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 has been released today. Did you update your system? How did it go? Noticed any differences so far? Problems?

NOTE: You can install this update via your Windows Update.
According to Microsoft's Technet, this release mainly includes bug fixes and security patches, but not much else; yep, that means no new features, guys.

I have already updated a while ago and at the moment, I still going through the process of looking for what-it-breaks (found 2, so far). Unfortunately for those who heavily customize our computers, we have enough experience with Microsoft's service packs to expect them to break something

That explains why my system went through a Service Pack update when I restarted my PC. I won't notice much because I've just reinstalled Windows 7 but I seriously would not mind them fixing this retard keyboard they made, it drives me nuts when it lags which it shouldn't.

How-to-Geek has answered both of your questions. Click here to view the article.

But basically, you install it via Windows Update.

There should be no risk for this. It's mainly a bunch of bug fixes and security patches (for a full list of the fixes and patches this service pack provides, download the excel spreadsheet here). I have installed on 6 computers without any significant problems (the few problems that I met are on my desktop and laptop, which I "play" with them too much).

However, around the web (you can read the comments on the How-to-Geek page or search on Google), many people are saying that the installation froze before it reaches 50% and won't continue; others have even encountered BSoD error. Some reported that their computer won't even boot pass the configuring-desktop screen; some said that after the update, their explorer.exe refuses to open, etc.

My personal opinion is that we should keep our Windows up-to-date. I haven't had any significant problem with the update; most don't. But it appears that many did have problems and as of now, no one know what the causes were.

It's totally your choice, man.

So far I have installed the service pack on 6 computers without a problem, the only issue I encountered was on the morning after release that the download took forever, probably because so many people were trying to download it at the same time. I haven't encountered this issue today.

Hm, I review each of my updates before installing, so it didn't update automatically. I was about to do so, but I was in the middle of something and couldn't be bothered with the ~30 minute wait time, so I decided to just leave it till I could be bothered. I'm glad it's not screwed up everything though ^^;

Updated using Windows Update the day it arrived, had no problems during installation and have had no problems since then.
