Going crazy without sound! - March 23rd 2011, 06:04 AM

So my Acer laptop runs on Windows Vista, and it sucks. But what it's doing now, is over the sound speaker thing on the bottom right, there's a red X. When you let your mouse sit over it, it says "No Audio Output Device Installed". And when you go to look it up in the device manager, the sound thing is gone so you can't look it up through there.

I tried to install the drivers from online but I don't think it worked right, or I did something wrong. It just downloaded a folder that I couldn't do anything with?

ANY help would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can install the new drivers via device manager. Just point it to the folder that you have downloaded.

Make sure that you got the correct drivers though.

Could you tell us what Acer laptop you have, please? The easiest place to find this info is right-click on Computer, select Properties, and look under Model.

This info will make it easier to find the correct driver for you. (Plus, details on how to install it.)

Alternatively, if you manage to find the "sound thing" in Device Manager again, try this fix:
1. Open Device Manager

2. Double-Click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers

3. A drop-down list will appear, double-click High Definition Audio Device from the list.

4. A new window will pop up, select the Driver tab.

5. Click Uninstall.

6. Then after it is uninstalled, go back to device manager window.

7. Right-click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and choose Scan for Hardware Changes
(OR you can click on Action and choose Scan for Hardware Changes)

8. Your system should automatically restore the driver. If this was an error with Vista, then this method should fixed it.

You can also run Windows Updates (Microsoft if you've set up for that) and it's possible the drivers would be downloadable from there (and automatically installed). If that doesn't work, I have more things to do/try. Let me know.
