Video Formats - August 31st 2011, 03:49 PM

Hey guys, I'm trying to upload a video of my cat being a weirdo to America's Funniest Home Videos online and it keeps telling me that my video isn't the right format. Now, me being completely technologically illiterate, I decided to ask for help from you wonderful people at TeenHelp

Now, the website says it has to be in ".WMV, .AVI, .MOV, or .MPG" Apparently, mine is none of the above. How do I figure out what format my video is in? And, can I change it? If so, would any of you be kind enough to explain how?

Thank you so much in advance

Hey; it'll tell you when you click on the video To easily change it, you can just open windows movie maker (which is on all pc's, if you have one) and upload your clip onto that, and then go to the top left and hit 'save as' and then choose 'best for computer use' and that should save it as a wmv

There's the codecs, then there's the containers. Basically, you would encode a video with a codec (such as Xvid), then wrap it with a container (such as AVI).

What you've listed are the containers. Are you sure that the codec isn't also a problem?

----------------

Anyway, there're many ways to check the format.

The easiest is to look at the file extension. For example, AwesomeMovie.avi would tell us that the video is in AVI format.

Alternatively, you can also right-click on the video ---> select Properties ---> select General tab ---> look under Type of File.

-----------------

Yes, it is generally possible to change video from one format to another. The problem is finding a video editor or video converter that supports the format. Since we don't know which format your video is in, I won't be able to recommend anything for sure.

However, iWisoft Free Video Converter can converts pretty much every common video formats under the sun, as long as you have the codecs. It is free of charge, with no advertising or included adware or toolbars. The interface is simple and clean; it also comes with many preset settings so you won't have to mess with the advanced settings.

If Windows Movie Maker doesn't work out for you, and you only need to convert your video, then give iWisoft Free Video Converter a try.

I just want to add that for importing, Windows Movie Maker only supports the following formats: .asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv.

If your video isn't in one of those formats, then you would need another video editor or converter.

Take a look at my previous post, where I mentioned iWisoft Free Video Converter. Try that. It should work.

Don't worry about it. If it works, then there's no need to make it more complicated, right?
