What to wear to farm job - June 19th 2013, 12:26 AM

Hey everyone!
So, I'm excited to say that I've gotten a job working as a farm hand at a local family farm. I'll be doing an internship there to learn about caring for animals and setting up an animal sanctuary, as well as founding their petting zoo.
My concern is that working on the farm, we're expected to wear jeans and cowboy boots. I plan to wear a cut-off t-shirt (ya know, the ones with holes on the sides) with a tank top under it, hoping that will keep me cool. It's supposed to be 70 degrees tomorrow....how can I stay cool wearing jeans during the summer?

What would be some good outfits to wear to work?

The key to staying cool in jeans and boots is to wear something not too tight, that allows for easy movement and air circulation. In my experience, it's a bad idea to wear shorts when doing outdoor work -- your knees and legs will get scraped and bitten by insects, you'll get sunburned, etc. When I do summer hikes I still wear long sleeves and pants, with full leather boots and a hat. Synthetic fabrics can help, though I don't mind the feeling of a sweaty cotton shirt on a summer day.

You can find my kind living right on the fault line, eyes on the seaside, lives on the B-side, kites on the power lines.

I agree with what Jay suggested, and I also want to add that you should probably shy away from anything white, as you'll have difficulty keeping it white for very long.

When I worked on the Farm when I was younger during the summer months what I would wear is:
-Hat (To keep the sun off your face)
-Sunglasses (If you're driving a tractor or outside, its nice to keep the sun out of your eyes
-Bandanna (either on the head under the hat, or in the back pocket to wipe sweat out of your brow)
-Tank top (best way to keep cool, can also keep a flannel near by if it gets windy or chilly, gets too hot? Take the tank top off)
-Blue jeans(relaxed fit, not tight, with a belt on that fits so your Underwear doesn't get flashed everytime you bend down.)
-Boots (Work boots while outside, or rubber boots if you are working in manure)

Make sure to tuck your jean legs in your boots to keep the manure off the jeans!

Also don't worry about wearing white, just wear cheap or old shirts you don't care about anymore. If you are expecting to keep it clean, you shouldn't be wearing it to a barn anyway!
Also, wearing jeans in the summer isn't as big a deal as some make it too be, just make sure to keep yourself hydrated work = sweat
sweat = dehydration
