Unhappy Nervous about what they'll think... - December 21st 2014, 08:33 AM

So, for Christmas I'm going to visit my cousins and grandparents in Scotland. In September, I got my hair done in a pixie cut and died red (it used to be slightly-longer-than-shoulder-length and brown). I'm slightly anxious about what they'll all think, especially my cousins and aunt and uncle because they're more 'uptight', 'conventional' and, well, 'plain' . My grandparents are cool, so I don't mind so much about what they think, but as I said I'm nervous about what my cousins and aunt and uncle think. I know that it doesn't really matter, because I find that it suits me and I'm pleased with it, but I can't help worrying. It probably seems a bit exaggerated, but I'm nervous that them not liking it will make me feel unneasy and shy and will 'ruin' (in part) my stay. I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to care what others think, but deep down I really, really do.

Any advice on how to take the situation, empathy, compassion, etc. will be much appreciated!

Hey there,

It can be scary thinking about what others think of you. But when you think about it, it really doesn't matter what they think. I believe that you look great just the way you are and you shouldn't worry what others think about you. If you are comfortable and satisfied with the way you look, you should feel confident about it. Sure your cousins, aunts, uncles might give you strange looks and possibly could say hurtful things, but don't let those affect you.

I'm assuming that you'll only be seeing them for a short amount of time for the holidays, right? Be confident about yourself. Chances are, those people won't be talking about you and your appearance the entire time while you are visiting.

Hope this helps and Happy Holidays to you!

Hey,

I know how it feels to be worried about what other people think. And, like you, while I know that my happiness is all that matters, I do care about what other people think. The truth is, though, that as long as you're happy with how your hair is done that is all that matters! And, if your family isn't fond of it, that's okay because it's your hair and you have your own unique style. If it'll make you feel better, maybe you can pack some clothing that makes you feel the most confident about yourself so it can boost your confidence a little bit. It's what's on the inside that counts the most, though!

I agree with what Rishy has said. Chances are, your family probably won't talk about your new hairstyle during the entire visit.

Thank you, I'll try to ignore them I guess. Happy holidays to you too!
