Question How often or how much can I bleach my hair without damaging it? - July 9th 2009, 05:45 PM

Okay, so I have naturally dark brown hair, and last night I bleached it blonde for the first time. I used the Herbal Essences XL1 bleaching kit, and it worked very nicely. It's a bit more yellow than I wanted it to be, but overall I'm very happy with it.

The only thig is, I have really short hair, so my roots will show a lot more than they would on someone with longer hair. Also, there's a chance I would want to blach it again in the near future so that I can get it more white than yellow. The only problem is, I don't know how often I can bleach my hair without causing serious damage to it. I have a slight fear that if I do it too much it will meaken my hair and it will start ot break off. So, basically, how much bleaching can hair usually take? And how often is it safe to bleach the roots? And would it be safe to bleach all of my hair again in a few weeks to lighten up the color a bit? Do you know of any good websites that give in-depth tips on hair bleaching? Thanks

Don't bleach it again... That whole bleaching phase for guys is over anyways. That was years ago, lol. You'd have to get it professionally bleached because you'll probably not able to bleach your new growth without re-bleaching your old on accident. It's not going to look good.

If you're using herbal essences, you're hair is going to be fried. Get a good product, like "Dumb blonde" by bedhead. That's a shampoo for bleach blondes, and more professional.

You should step away from bleaching kits altogether.

I had ONE attempt to bleach my hair - I got a home bleach kit and left it on or 45 minutes.
I thought everything was fine...until my hair started breaking off in clumps in my hands and on my hairbrush.

It's a very VERY bad idea. If you want to bleach your hair - go to a hairdresser. There is NO cutting corners on this. You will lose some hair if you slip up even once.

Also - if you had gone to a hairdresser in the first place then you wouldnt have a yellow tint to your hair now. Hairdressers will ALWAYS use a toner after bleaching to get rid of any yellow.

Once at my old job (I was a hairdresser, which makes my bleaching mistake all the more humiliating yet it proves my point about the home bleach kits being godawful, I know my methods but the product was a disgrace) I did a guy's hair bleach blonde for him and it took about 5 lots of toner to get the yellow out. Toner can be hard to get your hands on unless you go to a salon.

Also - bleaching without damage dosnt exist. Your hair will already have damage done to it. I suggest you stop using shampoo often - maybe twice a week but use a very good conditioner every time you have a shower and then perhaps a leave-in spray conditioner after that.

But I mean what I say - go to a hairdresser!
