DIY Clothing - March 12th 2010, 04:26 PM

Well, I am thinking about trying to be less commercial in what I wear now a days. Not that I was ever one to run out and drop fifty dollars on a pair of jeans, I am just looking to be cheaper in what I wear.

First of all, I am thinking about customizing some jeans I pick up sometime in the next week or two. I am not very good at painting or drawing, but I was thinking along the lines of ribbons. I am also not a girly girl so sparkly things wouldn't work for me.

Another idea I want to do is to make myself a pair of bondage pants. I found a site here and I am planning on picking up the materials needed. I am thinking about maybe using cargo pants, but I am not sure if side pockets would look weird. I think I remember seeing side pockets on some of my ex's Tripps. Are the placements usually on the side of the pants? For some reason I thought the top one usually connected on the front of the pants.

I do love the idea of wearing one colored shirt with another color shirt over it with rips in it (from the old DIY thread). I've seen it done and it's lovely. I really think that I might make several shirts out of this. Plus plain shirts are really cheap at Target or Walmart so if I don't find any in my sizes at a thrift store, I wouldn't feel too bad about paying around 20 dollars for two shirts.

Any other DIY clothing ideas that look pretty sweet? I am a really laid-back type of person that likes to wear loose pants and t-shirts. I also generally wear darker-colored shirts with khaki pants, but that's because I have to wear khakis to work. I do need more jeans.

I also sort of am influenced by industrial Goth-style, but I don't consider myself Goth based off of the Goths I have met in person that are my age or younger. I also like the DIY approach that some of the older Goths used and I guess I have weird sense of values that I don't want to spend 100 dollars on two pieces of clothing when I can make an entire outfit for 50 or less. Plus I have to look semi-average or else my school will make me wear my nursing scrubs everyday. Not that scrubs are uncomfortable, it just means I'd have to get another pair before I was planning on it.

Beware of the cats.

It really depends what your sewing skills are like, but I like to go to goodwill/salvation army and pick up things there that I then modify and change around. What way, if you fuck up, it was only a couple bucks lost.
