I have no idea how to do makeup. -
April 19th 2011, 06:36 AM
I think it's pretty self explanatory...
![]() I've tried playing with makeup and stuff before but I haven't gotten the hang of using it yet. I wore eyeshadow briefly in 8th grade to school and a boy jokingly told me I looked like a clown; haven't worn it in public since. Mostly I can't get the eyes right... eyeliner always looks wonky, and my eyeshadow looks gross. I'm also nervous about mascara because I don't want to hurt my eyelashes (as they are already shorter than most). I feel cool when I tell people that I don't wear makeup, primarily because it's such a big social stigma and most of my friends do; however, seeing everyone else be such professionals at it makes me feel like I'm missing out on something, almost like an art form. It's just difficult for me to use it; any tips for eyes especially? Thanks.

There are pretty much two parts to putting on make up: application and product. As far as the application goes, I'd strongly suggest that you watch some videos on YouTube. You can literally look up "How to apply eyeshadow" and "How to apply eyeliner." The most common places people go wrong are not knowing where to put it, not knowing how to blend it.
As far as product goes, you just need to play around a bit. Make sure that you get colors that suit you and something better than $1.00 eyeshadows. I'm not saying you need to use neutral colors only and spend $50 on eyeshadow palettes, but the quality of the eyeshadow is a consideration. Personally, I usually go to Ulta when Urban Decay is on sale and pick up a palette of like 4-10 colors that are all quite different so I can mix and match as I please. I've also used NYX shadows, which are cheap and pretty good quality. To be honest, the quality of the shadow isn't too too important as long as you use primer. You can either get a more expensive one like Urban Decay's Eye Primer Potion or just use some basic concealer. Make sure that you put primer on first so that the eyeshadow doesn't budge. Also, maybe try starting out with some more neutral colors since you're getting used to it so that it's not as noticeable if it's a bit sloppy. Unless you know how to apply eyeshadow, brighter eye colors really can look a bit silly. Eyeliner, however, is something that really just takes practice. Again, look up videos online and see how people apply theirs. There are a lot of different types of eyeliner, which you could consider trying. There are pencils, which are most commonly used because they're a bit easier and more natural to use; there are gels and creams (which I use); and there are liquid liners, which you should probably only try if you feel confident about either pencils or gels. A lot of it will come down to your own preferences, but you can definitely find a lot of information on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8_LGa_HNno http://youtu.be/sdp_UAvA1zk (this was the very video I used to learn to apply my eyeliner and now I don't even need a mirror or anything to do it) As far as mascara goes, you really don't need to worry about it being bad for your eyelashes. If you like, you can actually look for some that are made to be conditioning for your lashes (sorry that I can't remember or think of any). Just remember to wash it off gently at the end of the day with some makeup remover and you'll be fine.
"Love me for me, accept the fact I'm true, live like I want, fufill my dreams, Dream of me, run out free, capture your words and never let them go." I'll see you on the other side. |

Agreed(= ^^ Makeup sort of came naturally to me, but it is somewhat of an art form, Lol or maybe I'm biased just because I adore makeup.. but anyways, try to get a four color palette at first, in maybe a brown neutral, and using that really helps with your shading practice. Worked for my step sister when I taught her about makeup. Youtube is a great place to start. I personally recommend bubzbeauty's tutorials, and I've watched a few from Michelle Phan. Also, if you're a Stumbler (if not your missing out, I swear<3), you could enter in beauty and just look for websites on there. I've gotten some great makeup tips from just Stumbling.(= It's trial and error, basically you just have to go until you find what works for you. Don't feel presured to wear makeup though, some people just don't need it! Although, I'm not saying skip off to prom bare-faced.. I'm not sure any of us could pull that off!

I'm not so great with advice. Could I interest you in a sarcastic comment instead? |
