Horrible Fashion Sense - May 5th 2011, 07:47 PM

Okay, so like I stated in my earlier thread, I am going to a new school next year. Prior to this year (my sophomore year) I had been in a small private school for about six or seven years. We wore uniforms. Outside of school I mainly wore gym shorts and t shirts. I have a few skirts that I wear to special occasions. That's about it. Next year I will be going to public school, and I have no clue what to wear. I'm most comfy in shorts and skirts. Occasionally capris. I don't want to wear jeans. I have kind of a tight budget, and a toooon of stores around to shop at. What should I look for, where should I go... etc. etc. I have no style preference and no fashion sense. I don't really want anythiing that is too out there. I'm kind of horrible at things like that. I really need yall's help. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Hey!! I know what you mean... I was in a private school too for five years (uniform only) and the fashion sense I had at that time was horrible... I look back at those pictures and I physically cringe in horror :P

Well first of all, wear what you feel comfortable wearing. By that, if you feel like you are revealing too much or something is not covering enough, then don't wear it. It's simple as that. Don't let the pressure get to you!!

Anyways, fashion trends and styles change every few months, so I won't be much help to you if I just list what's "in" right now. What I recommend is you look at
catalogs online and see what kind of clothes are popular right now. If the price is okay and you feel like you wouldn't be uncomfortable in it, then keep an eye out for that item or similar ones when you go shopping.

After you look through a lot of online catalogs, you'll get a sense of what type of style you prefer (girly,casual, colorful, neutralcolors, simple, layered, etc.). If that doesn't work, try going to a store (by yourself or with a friend/your parents if you want) and just try out everything that you like!

If you need help, ask the shop assistants. Most of them are super friendly and helpful. I'm the kind of person who likes to shop individually and not have a lot of employees over you, so if you're that type of person, just say, "Thanks, but I think I got it" or something along those lines... >< After you try on a lot of clothes, you'll probably be able to filter out the ones you don't like... or maybe you'll like all of them (I know a lot of people that look good in ANY type of clothing!). Either way, pick out your favorite few from those that are in your price range and buy them....

Here are some online catalogs of popular clothing stores... have a look around and see if you find anything you like (haha I sound like a store assistant)!!:
Some of these clothes can get pricey but don't worry... there are a lot of shops that have similar styles, only cheaper!

I also know a lot of beauty gurus on YouTube who, to this day, help me a LOT with my clothes/jewelry/makeup. I'll list a few of them in hope that they inspire/help you too!!
  • bebexo (more makeup than clothes, but she is great!)
  • Macbarbie07 (she is great as well... gives lots of advice on styles of clothing, how to choose your type, etc.)
  • hollyannaeree (does "outfit of the day" videos, tells you about special offers, and an all-around awesome beauty guru!)
  • AllThatGlitters21 (she also does a lot of makeup tutorials but has a lot of great clothing/shoe videos too!)

In the end, it's all up to whether you like it or not! I really hope I helped...
Good luck!
-Hannah

P.S. Sorry about all those colors. I was bored. :P

I thumbed up because of the colours :P

High street and mall store usually put what is in style in the window, near the front or near the dressing rooms. If you are unsure ASK. The cashier or store assistant wont laugh at you, also, if they have no uniform, the latest fashion will usually be being worn by them They've an obligation to wear it (also staff discounts help)
Take a mental note of what people your age are wearing too.

It also depends on what the school is personally like. For example, in the public high school in the town over, the girls would rather die than go to school without makeup or clothing with some popular/expensive brand name. But at my public high school, most of us where jeans, sweatpants, and t-shirts. Can't go wrong with nice jeans and a nice fitted shirt.

And as a senior, trust me, sometimes we tend to wake up, shower, then throw pajama pants back on for school. Lol, I wouldn't advise it, but it's not uncommon.

Well, in the UK most schools until sixth form (i think you stay in high school while we move to sixth form) have uniforms if not all.
But what i would wear usually, because you need to be smart, simple but cute!
Is maybe a tube skirt? Forever 21 do these for like £5, not sure in $ sorry!
My sister looks beautiful in polo tops a tube skirts!

Im a massive fan of shorts! I love chino shorts, denim shorts etc, and the good thing is they go with like anything! I wear shorts in the winter with black opaque tights, and hoodies, and boots, you can pick up these pretty cheap, i got some chino ones from Forever 21 for £15 the other week

So to sum up, what i personally think looks lovely is, and should be staples of your wardrobe are;

Bottoms;
Tube skirt, with plain vest/tank top, with necklaces to spice up the outfit a bit, or no necklaces and a top with more of a detail on. I think they look nice with a tank top, and one of those shirts (likefarmer shirts:P) open and undone

Shorts, Go with everything! Hoodys, cardigans, litreally everything! High waisted, not high waisted, plain shorts, patterned, theres alot to choose from!

Leggings, or if you prefer jeggings (i just dont :P) Are brilliant! I hate jeans too, there uncomfortable tbh.. i love leggings, again like shorts, you can wear with anything.

Tops;
Tank tops, especially black and white ones.
Shirts; by shirts i mean these type..

Cardigans! Oh my, you can't not have cardigans, they go with all the 'bottoms' staples i mentioned I try to get differen't coloured cardiganes, that way, if im wearing just a plain outfit, my cardigan will add something extra!

Hope i helped, :P
