Remaking skirt, need a little help! - August 9th 2011, 04:23 PM

Hi!
First of all, I wasn't sure where to post this, so feel free to move it if it's in the wrong place.

I have a skirt that I'm not too pleased with; it's rather tight in a somewhat stretchy fabric, but it's a size too big and I don't really like how it looks on. So I got the idea to remake it, and I wanted to buy some felt fabric (done!) and cut out maple leaves (since fall's coming up quickly here) and sow on kind of like ruffles. The problem is, though, that I didn't get enough fabric I think (sure, I can just go get more, but it's somewhat expensive for my budget). If I'm still going to make the leaves, I want people to be able to see that they are leaves and not just some shape, so therefor I don't want to make them too small. However, I don't want to make them too big either, so that they'll be too overwhelming.

Do you guys think that this is a good idea at all, or should I change the shape (into what?) or give up completely?

And if/when I'm about to sow the pieces on, do you think it'd be best if I sow them in straight lines vertically, and just sew them on beneath each other (just like regular ruffles, on any ruffled skirt), or to do it in sort of a zig-zag pattern? Kinda like when you're building with Lego and have to have a piece overlapping two others for them to stick together?

I hope you understood what I meant, just ask if you didn't! I realize that it wasn't such a good explanation.

The fabric I got are in four different colours; red, yellow, orange and light green, and the pieces are 20cmX30cm (about 8inchX11,5inch).

Any help is appreicated! <3

Hi dear

I think that maybe clustering the leaves at the bottom of the skirt and dotting a few above it would look good... kind of like leaves falling to the ground.

I don't really know much about sewing or designing clothes... but I think it'd be cool to keep the theme of leaves.

I hope it all goes well, and hopefully this helped a little bit <3
