Earning money - August 25th 2012, 08:42 PM

Anyone have any ideas on how a 14-year-old can earn money?

Thanks!

Well, if you like kids, baby-sitting is always something....

Unfortunately I have looked and asked around, and no jobs are available for babysitting.

You could do a paper route . . . that's what I did when I was 14 (and still now!). Also, you could mow people's lawns or do gardening (I did that too).

The paper route jobs are taken in my area, and 1: mowing seasons pretty much over, but do plan on that next spring.

Gardening is a good idea, but I think it's out of season and I have no clue how to do that.

I believe 14-year-olds can work at McDonalds, at least in my state. They can also work as a grocery bagger, if you have grocery stores there where people bag groceries for you. (Here we have Fareway, and that's where most 14-year-olds work to get money).

Send out resumes to everywhere and pray for a response. Or talk to your parents about doing chores and getting pocketmoney. I am currently getting 50 dollars a week from parents and am seeking out a job down the road. I wish you luck in trying to earn money, easier said than done.

Depends on your area, I don't know what country you live in, the laws on minors working are very different country from country. All of the suggestions already are great ideas. Can I ask what you are trying to raise money for? What kind of wages are you trying to get?
What helps is asking your parents if they can hire you to clean, file paper work, lawn work. Ask them if their friends or co-worker need anyone to do any similar work. You are much more likely to get work through someone you already know than a stranger at this age.

Re: Earning money - August 26th 2012, 02:31 AM

I live in Canada. There are no McDonald's in town, but there are 2 grocery stores and a Tim Horton's. Only Timmies is hiring-- I actually just remembered I know the owner's family fairly well, so I might talk to them sometime this week.

Honestly, there are 2 things I am saving up for:

1: Christmas shopping
2: Everything else right up till next summer will be given to my parents to try and help pay for summer camp (I wanna go for 4 weeks, and it's about $1,200 weekly, so if I want to stand a chance of going for that long I reeeeally should help out, right?)

If you intend to enter into an "agreement" with any individual grown up and do gardening work for them, or washing their car, or anything... keep a written record of this agreement, or some sort of other record. I speak from experience when I say there are plenty of assholes who see younger people such as you and even myself as naive idiots who can be taken advantage off. Personally, I like to use a voice recorder. A "contract" always exists, and proof of it can either exist in written form with a signature, or in verbal form recorded on tape somehow. It's useful and even essential stuff to know and understand. There are better people on this site to advise you more if you're interested. Plus I'm only familiar with it in the UK, it's probably slightly different in the US, especially regarding minors (under 18s, or under 16s depending on your state). For me... there's very little more irritating than having done a job for someone, and then that someone lies in my face and refuses to pay me.

Perhaps you live in a small area where everyone knows and respects each other enough for these sorts of precautions to be unnecessary.

As for specific ways to rake in some money... I'd create some small leaflets describing what sort of jobs you are prepared to do and give them out. Dropping them through the letter box is like throwing them in the bin, so what I did is I'd pin them up on the front door with a tiny bit of blue tack... it gets more attention then. Leave some contact details on the leaflets. It could be your mobile number or email address, or both. I preferred getting a new number and new email address for these sorts of things.

Realistically... probably not. Maybe not illegal, but "against school policy". Doing a little bit on the side won't really draw much attention, but if you're thinking of opening a sweat shop then lol... you'd better ask first.

"I don't care about politics"
Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

You could try pet sitting if no families around you are looking for a babysitter. You could just make some posters with any odd jobs you are willing to do and put them up around your neighborhood.

And here you are living, despite it all.
