Do you budget for Christmas? - December 13th 2018, 01:00 PM

Christmas is almost here, which means spending money for most. For those who spend money on gifts or travel do you set a budget?

When you set a budget for gifts do you limit the amount you spend on each person or just the total amount?

Do you have advice or suggestions for others who may struggle with budgeting around the holidays? Sometimes, we spend too much.

TeenHelp has an article on, Effectively managing money, if anyone is interested to know more about managing money.

Re: Do you budget for Christmas? - December 13th 2018, 02:03 PM

For someone who works only 20 hours a week at Target and is a Senior in High School I don't make that much money so yes I do have to budget for Christmas. Fortunately there isn't very many people I have to buy gifts for and really they don't even expect me to get them gifts. I am also 14 weeks pregnant so that adds to them not wanting me to focus on purchasing gifts for them. I have my Mom, Aunt and Uncle, and Nana and Opa. My Mom I spend the most on usually getting a 50 dollar gift and the rest getting a 25 dollar gift. The total I spend is 150 dollars. I guess my advice is to set a price and stick with it. Also if you have other bills to pay get them out of the way and see what you have leftover before spending on gifts.

That was a handy article!

I do have a gift budget and I have the same limit per person. It works for me at least.

My biggest pet peeve is paying for delivery. I either try to shop offline or if I shop online, I try to get gifts from the same store at the same time so I only pay delivery the once.

Unfortunately I do have to budget for Christmas.

I have more people to buy gifts for including my Mum and Dad, my brother, my grandmother, my boyfriend, my boyfriends parents, my boyfriends grandparents and my boyfriends 'sister'.

I budget per person unless there's something major I really want to get someone, just to make sure I'm able to give everyone at least something.

I budget.

I save money all year long and tend to have a set amount I spend on each person.. By saving all year long I don't have to worry about not have enough or coming up with a large amount of money in a short amount of time

I budget too.
I can't work, so I don't get so many money.
I'm giving about 10 presents this year, and I have enough money for that.
Haven't brought any of them yet
Buying them tomorrow

Re: Do you budget for Christmas? - December 20th 2018, 03:20 PM

Yes and no. It kind of depends.

I try to buy early on, usually starting in August or so and that gives me a longer opportunity to buy gifts and I can spread my purchases out. I don’t go out of my way to buy gifts early on; usually I see something that reminds me of someone and I get it without planning on it. The only thing I don’t like about buying gifts early is storing them.

If there’s something big (and usually there isn’t) I will look for deals and use coupons whenever I can. I like coupons for whatever purchase they will work for.

I think I budget more for birthdays.

Re: Do you budget for Christmas? - December 21st 2018, 06:01 PM

For holiday travel, I don't budget so much as I try to get a deal because either I have the money or I don't. Like I am probably not going to Hawaii any time soon, but a flight to stay at my parents for a week is manageable. I do this by using websites like expedia where you can regularly get deals, especially if you bundle things (e.g. flight + rental car, flight + hotel, or flight +rental + hotel). I also collect Air Miles and use my parents points where I can. Also, it's important to be mindful of what travel days around holidays are cheapest and research what time of year it is the cheapest to book something, it might be easiest to book in August versus waiting for late November where the flights and stuff likely cost more.

For things like gifts, I tend to budget per person, and usually expect to spend max X amount on gifts, but I'd spend less if I had to. I spread it out throughout the year as well. I'm not going to buy everything in November and December, I'll buy some stuff in July even, if that's what it takes, because that's when I saw the thing I wanted to get for the person.

Another thing I am mindful of is how much it costs for other people to host a meal -- if my in laws are having 10 people over for a meal, I expect that to be expensive. So, to be polite, I'll usually offer to prepare a dessert or an appetizer, or to bring a bottle or 2 of wine (where I live people can purchase alcohol at 18 and I'm 25 so obviously don't take that particular suggestion if you're underage)

I do and I don't. I usually have a set amount per person that I try not to go over, but it's not set in stone. I really only buy gifts for family members, though, and I typically only buy gifts that they've asked me for specifically. My reasoning for this is that it's hard to shop for someone else, and a lot of Christmas gifts end up getting donated or thrown away because the people receiving them don't like them. I prefer that others do the same for me - only buy me things that I ask for! I just find it a lot less stressful this way.

We're not big on Christmas, so I get whatever some people want (if I've got enough saved) and spend most cash on me :P

Just a word of advice from someone who knows a bit about this, don't get into the trap of instalments/cheap debt for this stuff cause it's a slippery slope and next thing you know you're out of cash and in deep trouble. It's better to not to get a present than get in debt

Re: Do you budget for Christmas? - December 23rd 2018, 05:18 PM

It may be too late for input since Christmas is only 2 days away, but I do force myself to have a budget for Christmas. I love buying gifts for the people in my life so I tend to go a little overboard. By setting myself a limit, it helps me make sure I'm not putting myself in a tough financial situation by showering people with gifts.

When your a full time college student on a part time income there certainly has to be a budgeted account for Christmas. I am somewhat luck though as for years a group of my friends have done a Secret Santa thing which we pick one of the group friends names and we have a $50 limit to spend on the gift for that friend. As for my family I have my older sister and mom as my dad passed when I was 1 year old. Both sets of my grandparents are also not with me any longer as well and my other family doesn't exchange gifts. So I get to spend more on my sister and mom and they usually get $100 each on them.
