How to Make Color Stay in Longer? - May 30th 2012, 06:10 PM

I've noticed that when I color my hair the color fades out/lightens really fast. How do I get the color to last? Any products you would recommend?

I think you should really look into a colorstay shampoo (yes that's one word, colorstay not two lolz.), they help your hair hold onto the dye better so it doesn't fade as quickly and stays vibrant longer.

Garnier Fructise makes a good colorstay shampoo: Click.
I used to use that when I dyed my hair. Also, rinsing your hair in cold water helps to keep the color from washing out, and of course shampooing less often will help.

It's also a good idea to use milder shampoos than brands like Head & Shoulders, which is quite harsh and strips the colour out. I use Herbal Essences when I can afford to, and I've noticed it does keep the colour in for longer than when I use a harsher shampoo.

Re: How to Make Color Stay in Longer? - June 1st 2012, 02:18 AM

I use Nexxus Color Assure shampoo and conditioner, but any shampoo that helps lock in and preserve color will probably work just fine. Let's see. The more often you wash your hair, the quicker it fades. If you wash your hair every day, cutting down to every other day will help keep the color in longer. Lukewarm/cool water helps. Hot water draws out more dye. Oh, also. If you're going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, it couldn't hurt to put on a hat. Lots of sun exposure can make your hair lighter.

That's all I can think of right now.

I'm just repeating the others at this stage, but try and use products that are colour friendly and that promote lasting colour. Things like hot water, sun, hair appliances ad chlorine can all strip hair of its colour so try and use them sparingly. Keeping your hair in good condition will help keep the colour in longer.

How do you define good condition? My hair us healthy, not dry or any split ends, but the color is still bleeding out.

When you put in the hair dye, how long are you leaving it in? Since Manic Panic is vegan, you can leave it in for awhile without it damaging your hair. I always left mine in for at least an hour so that my hair could really absorb the color.
If your hair is healthy, then it is in good condition. However slightly damaged hair is more porous and tends to absorb color better than virgin hair.

One trick to try, might be adding some of the left over dye to your conditioner, so when you wash your hair, it isn't stripped of the colour.

I've never actually tried it, but I hear it works well xxx

That was one of the things I heard from one of the people who worked at the store I bought the dye from. I have yet to try it as well but I'm confident that it'll work.

That conditioner tip really does work... When I used Manic Panic and similar dyes for my red hair it really helped keep the colour in I miss my red but I can't bleach it right now because too bright a red looks pants on me ;(

This one would be a good choice to maintain your color hair!
