Which color highlights? Have you ever done them yourself? - May 29th 2013, 12:27 PM

Hey

I was supposed to go to my mom's hairdresser to get them done, but we don't have the money right now and I needed them done before this Saturday. So I've decided to buy a hair dye kit and do them myself.

I have short, brown, curly hair. And I'm stuck between either red (the natural one) or blonde highlights. What do you think?

I've never done highlights, nonetheless experimented too much with my hair. So before I go on YouTube, have any of you done highlights yourself?

Just a warning, but highlights can be hard to do yourself because its hard to figure out where to put the streaks. If you must have them done, then I would have you mother help you with it.
If you want the highlights to be more noticeable, go with blonde. If you want them to appear more natural, go with red.

And here you are living, despite it all.

When I got my first gray hair, I thought I'd dye. Sorry, had to! Anyhoo, I agree with Nicole about your mom helping you. And also look up videos and guides with tips on doing it. My opinion is the blond highlights. Keep us updated! I bet you'll look beautiful with whichever you choose.

I think blonde looks really good. I'm getting my hair dyed red by a professional and she also told me that red fades faster. My blonde highlights generally last quite a while though too, but I've had them professionally done. I'd recommend having your mom or someone else help you out.

My personal opinion is blonde.

My vote is blonde. I highlighted a girl's hair once. I used the cap thing (old school and not the best method) and pulled out strands and bleached her hair. It turned out great. However, she has really light brown hair. The lighter your hair is, the easier it will be. If you haven't ever done it yourself, I recommend getting your mom or a friend to help you with the sections in the back.

Hey, thanks for your responses! I have really dark brown hair, so we did end up going with the blonde. But, however, there was a little problem. I have no clue what happened, though. We got the natural kind, and my mom started to highlight it. My original color became few and far between so she decided to just dye all of my hair. And for some reason, it came out black! I just wanted to feel pretty; let me tell you, I don't look good with black hair. I'm going to get it professionally done for my birthday. Thanks again, guys!
