Bleaching & dying my hair - February 9th 2010, 12:08 PM

My hair is currently dyed darkish brown (I'm a natural blonde), I've ordered some purple and pink manic panic hair dye and a bleaching kit off the internet to dye my hair. I'm thinking of doing it mostly purple with pink under the fringe. Any tips on how to do the bleaching part? I'm really paranoid about it going blotchy lol.

Well I'd suggest going in and getting it done, since you're hair is dyed already. I actually did what you're planning recently(bleach + manic panic purple) and I'm gonna tell you, it's gonna looks pretty bad after about a week.

This is me after home bleaching, and my hair had never been dyed before. This is the first attempt at purple, this the second try a day later, and this is what it looks like now, a week later. I'm now looking for a better purple dye, 'cause I'm not gonna redye my hair every week and a half.

I've bleached my hair lots of times at home and never had any problems. But my hair handles the amount i bleach and dye it better than a lot of peoples.
I'd say the most important thing is to make sure your hair is light enough to dye over. I normally use a bleach meant for dark hair, so it's stronger. If it doesn't strip the colour enough, you may want to wait a couple of days and bleach it again before dying it.
I use a tint brush, and separate my hair so I can bleach each layer at a time. You may need help with the back of your head, because I find I always manage to miss bits, and have patches that aren't bleached properly because I can't see what I'm doing.
Just follow the instructions and it should be fine

and iDream, have you every tried special effects hair dye? It's all I use. I normally use the red-based colours, which apparently last longer than the blues and purples and stuff, but they last really well, especially over bleached hair, and they come out really bright. I dyed my hair red with special effects at the end of November, and I've now found I'm having to re-bleach and re-dye my hair because my roots are too long, which is annoying because the red still looks amazing!

hope that helps.

Be careful when you're bleaching your hair, because doing so over dyed hair would take a lot of work, and a lot of bleach. With this, you risk damaging the hair and it could break off. You also need to be careful because there's a chance your hair could go orange! For bleaching, I'd go and get it done professionally unless you want to take these risks!

Good luck.

SPECIAL EFFECTS. omg yes, I've used it before! It's been years and I forgot the brand name, that stuff lasted hella long. Thanks!! I've been trying to remember what it was called.

To the op, I agree with what jiggi said, tint brush all the way! 8D It's my favorite hair dyeing tool. lol

NEVER bleach your hair by yourself. I can almost promise you you're going to mess it up. I had purple, like a REALLY nice purple with my hair being black. If I tried bleaching and trying to add color I would mess it up big time.

Another addition from me!

I went from dyed dark purple (literally black) to blonde how my hair is now. But what I did was give myself a few bleach highlights for months and months until the black was covered, and then I did a all over blonde dye to even things out. But this did take like a year, but it was the least damage I could have done to my hair. And I had it done professionally, (by my mother but she's a hairdresser!). It did go orange, with all the bleach highlights. I was orangey yellow for ages! But after the all over dye it was fine. And now I'm a lovely blonde!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
