Red hair: How do I stop it from fading so quickly? - May 17th 2010, 07:15 PM

I'm going to dye my hair bright red soon I had red hair when I was about 13/14 and it used to fade like crazy It goes an icky colour which hasn't even got a name How could I stop it from fading as much? Do certain shampoos/conditioners work?

I think you can get red hair specific shampoos and conditioners, and I think that's the only way you can preserve the red really. The red dye doesn't stick to the hair as well as other colours, or some technical mumbojumbo here. Basically it fades faster, as you know. The best ways to keep it staying vibrant is to wash it with the colour shampoos and conditioners, and try not to wash your hair as much. I know it can be hard, but it'll preserve the colour for longer. You can use dry shampoos in between washes to keep your hair looking fresh. And when having red hair, you might need to dye it more often.

Those are my only tips! I can't think of anything else that would work really. I think there's probably a good hair dye that would last longer also. You just need to look around.

Good luck!

Here are some things you can do:
1. Keep your hair out of the sun as much as possible.
2. Use conditioners and shampoos for colored hair.
3. Avoid using hair products and straighteners/curling irons (If you do have to use a curler/straightener, make sure you use heat protecting spray.
4. The best brand of hair dye I have found is 'Raw' from HotTopic. When I dyed mine, it lasted a very long time.

Last but not least, the more white blonde you hair is when you dye it, the longer it will last.
Good luck!

Thanks ^____^ I think I may have seen red hair shampoo before. My mum's friend used to teach hairdressing so I'll ask her what dye she recommends

Edit: My hair is light brown with blonde highlights atm So, it will dye over quite good I think.

Because of the different colour combinations in your hair, the red will turn out lovely

Your welcome
I would ask the hairdresser about the brand Raw. She may not be accustomed to it because it is a HotTopic product. My sis used Raw as well and she still has some left in her hair and it has been a year.

With the brown, it may fade more quickly. My hair was blonde when I dyed it.
I'm sure it will still last a good amount of time though

I bought Live xxl When I had blue/black hair I used to use it and it was good My mum's friend just put it on my hair I have to wait a bit before I can wash it off. It's going to be SO bright =)) On the back of the box it showed how light it goes with brown hair and my hair is even lighter than that.

I find that Live fades really quickly on my hair even if it's just a brown or black colour =/

You could buy semi permanent colour shampoo (superdrug's is good) and once a week you could wash your hair in it to top up the colour

Try this website for your dyes, I got a metalic purple and it lasted ages, really bright too.

I've used that exact fye before, and it faded fairly quickly at first, but then stayed a fairly bright red for ages
