good shampoo brands? - January 7th 2012, 02:49 AM

My mom had to pay 45 dollars for a shampoo I wanted for christmas. but the sad part is....I don't want to pay 45 dollars every time I run out of shampoo...what is a good shampoo brand that is healthy for my hair that is for dry, brittle hair that doesn't cost and arm and a leg to buy? right now I use redken real control. Its good and I can buy it evrey now and then when I get money which is on rare occassions because I don't have a job, I go to school. any idea?

I use Finesse. My hair has been dry, and even looks like dread locks sometimes or that a rat lives in my hair. Finesse has been the only thing that has worked to protect my hair from that. I'd give this a shot. It's about 4 dollars a bottle.

I have used most kinds of drugstores shampoos, and so far my favorite has probably been Pantene. It is very moisturizing and their products for different hair types all seem to help very well. I use the one to keep away frizz for medium to thick hair and it does work very well, my hair continues to look nice until my next shower.

I use Organix, mainly because it is organic shampoo and my skin is really sensitive and anything that's non organic gives me a rash. I've noticed that my hair is pretty shiny and soft as well with this.

This might seem ridiculous, but the problem might be that you use shampoo too often in the first place. If you go without shampoo, your hair might seem greasy at first, but that can be controlled by rinsing and massaging your hair with apple cider vinegar. You may not like the smell, but it goes away pretty quickly. If you want to hide it, rub in a drop of lavender into your hair after your shower. Also, you should only shampoo once every few days, rather than every day.

For your shampoo, choose one without Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulphate. That's going to be your biggest enemy. If you still find your hair is brittle, then mix in a small drop of jojoba oil into your shampoo. Even avocado oil, or almond oil will be helpful. Don't use too much.

I use Tresseme, always have and always will. It makes your hair silky smooth without making it frizzy in the process. AND its not ridiculously expensive :P

I use Herbal Essences- for wavy and long hair. They have a pretty good selection too, so you could find one more suited to your hair.

I read this on this beauty blog I follow regarding things to avoid when you're buying shampoo.

Quote:
MIT (methylisothiazolinone): This is a chemical biocide, allergen, cytotoxin and neurotoxin that is added to commercial shampoos to control bacterial growth in water based substances. Prolonged use of this chemical can not only start to destroy your cell function but as the University of Pittsburgh study shows concern with, is that MIT can effect the neurons of unborn fetuses. Governmental and business agencies in Japan and the United States have not done testing on the effect of the human body for this toxin and state that there is not enough data to stop thechemicals production and consumer usage.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate / Sodium Laureth Sulfate: This is a chemical substance that is also known by Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, SDS and NaDS. Manufactures use this chemical to enhance lather and remove oil. This chemical is a biocide that eats away at skin tissues and is retained in the body’s cells on a long term basis. Known to cause the following: canker sores, skin rashes, dandruff, skin infections, skin corrosion, swelling of the hands, arms and face, eye irritation and mimics the human hormone Oestrogen. First studied and known to cause such effects since the printed report in the Journal of The American College of Toxicology in 1983, the governmental and businessagencies in several counties have yet to stop mass consumer usage of this chemical.
DEA (diethanolamine): This chemical is used in shampoos for its lather enhancement and as a wetting agent. DEA is a biocide, cytotoxin and neurotoxin. DEA mixes with other cosmetic ingredients to create NDEA (nitrosodiethanolamine) a known carcinogen. Studies have linked this chemical to an increase in stomach, liver, esophagus and bladder cancers. It is also known to inhibit fetal brain development and cause miscarriages. Currently, there is no legal regulation from governmentalagencies to stop mass production or consumer usage of products containing this chemical.
Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate - Biocide and general toxin that inhibits human reproduction, human development and is known to reduce fertility.
Parabens - mimics the human hormone estrogen increasing the human risk of breast cancer, infertility in young women and hormone imbalances in males.
Propylene Glycol - strong skin irritant that can cause both liver and kidney damage.
Tocopheryl Acetate - can cause the human immune system to overreact and can cause skin itching, burning, scaling, hives and blistering.

Apparently the only commercial brands that are completely free of this stuff are the Burt's Bees brand and L'Oreal Everstrong/Everpure lines. They're a little more on the expensive side but not by much and I believe you're doing yourself a lot of good by choosing these ones. Personally, I use this weird shampoo with nettles in it to combat oily hair and I usually only use brands such as Tresemme, Aussie, Herbal Essences when that's all that's available. Those shampoos tend to just 'coat' your hair and make it feel like crap.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

I use Aussie they have a couple different shampoos and conditioners I use moist(I think that's what it's called). It's for dry brittle hair like mine was. I have been using it for almost a year now and my hair is smooth and healthy, my hair was in bad shape before I started using Aussie. And one of the best things about Aussie shampoo and conditioner is that it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

45 dollars for shampoo?! WOW! Well I have annoying thick hair that can't decide if it wants to be wavy or straight or curly so it's something in between the three of those things. It can be hard to tame and like you I can't afford to spend a ton of money on shampoo. What I use is Aveeno. It's AWESOME! And it's cheap. They also have a conditioning spray that is awesome! It's by far the best cheap shampoo I've found and does wonders to relax my hair. And it keeps it soft even when I straighten it. They have different kinds but I personally use the "Nourish and Shine" brand and it works great.

Not going to lie, my favorite shampoo (and favorite conditioner, as well) is Mane and Tail. It's horse shampoo. But, I have never found any shampoo that makes my hair feel nicer, and overall cleaner.

I like Pantene a lot. But I use Suave. I don't really like that brand. It has weird smells.
