Bleaching before dyeing - March 6th 2012, 01:57 AM

So I'm hopefully going to dye my hair soon, most likely dark purple streaks. Is it better to bleach the hair you want to dye first? My hair is dirty blond and I know usually people with black hair need to, but would that help the color last longer?

Also, any tips for dyeing it myself?

It will help the color come out more vibrant which in turn will make it last longer. So you don't necessarily have to bleach it if you're hair is a light enough blonde, but the color will come out much better if you bleach it first.

Bleaching the hair makes it more "porous", for lack of a better way to put it, thus any "funky" colours (i.e. purples, blues, etc.) will adhere to the hair better if you bleach it.

Make sure you get a professional to bleach it, or even a friend who has experience bleaching hair (without frying it). Plus, it never hurts to leave the colours on for longer, since bright colours are usually ammonia-free. That means technically, you could keep the colour in overnight and still not have any problems. But, an hour is usually a good processing time.

My hair is blonde, so I didn't think I needed to bleach it. I didn't, and the colors faded in about 3 weeks. :l You can only see my tips in direct sunlight now.

Generally speaking, is it expensive to get it done at a salon?

It depends on how long your hair is. The last time I had my hair colored it was around $80 I believe and that was without bleaching it as well. You could always ring up some salons near you and check prices, but it will probably be around there. So yes, it is a little expensive but at least you are guaranteed that it will turn out.

Check and see if there is a Paul Mitchell school near you. They have great prices and you're color will come out beautiful.
