Talking Tattoos! - July 24th 2011, 03:22 AM

So, the opportunity has finally risen for me to get a tattoo! I'm unfathomably excited, but I'm still undecided as to which of the three tattoos I want to get first.

Possibly something like these wings. There's really not much symbolism behind this one, other than that one of the characters in a story I wrote -- and continue to write -- happens to have one like this. That character is pretty much me, the way I want to be. So I figured that the symbolism behind this tattoo would be me becoming who I want to be.

However, it's kind of large, and I'd rather do something small to begin with.

^I want the three rabbits running in a circle from that album cover tattooed on the back of my neck. This one is the one that I feel is the most important to me. This band got me through a lot of tough stuff, and to this day, any time I listen to their music, I smile no matter what mood I'm in. They also happen to be the band that inspired me to be a musician myself. I chose the art from this particular album because it was the first of theirs that I heard. To me, it also means being myself and breaking free.

^ This is the one that I've wanted most recently. I have a particular phoenix necklace that I wear when I need to be comforted, that my grandmother got me. The phoenix is a symbol of rebirth and continuing life. Whenever I see a phoenix, it comforts me. The other day I was putting on my necklace, when I realized if I had a tattoo of one, I'd be able to it with me forever.

So, which one do you think I should get? Just need opinions, mostly. Also, some advice for a person who's getting her first tattoo would also be great. I've read all over the internet, to make sure the place is sterile, look at their previous work, et cetera, but no one really said anything about the actual getting of the tattoo, so, what's it like?

I think the first two are bad ideas. One, the wings are too much....imagine you old with that. not very attractive. The second one is eh...yeah you like the band ect, but that's not a great reason to have it tattooed to you. Specially on the neck. Bad placement.

If you really want one and have thought about it for awhile, go with the third one.

Getting a tattoo is extremely painful...depending on what part of the body varies the level of pain, of course. Honestly, I like the first one but I agree with Briana - when you get old, that definitely won't look as attractive. I definitely like the third one, and it seems to mean a lot to you. I don't know where you were planning on getting it, but I would have that on my forearm, maybe on my back or calf? Hmm... if you have it, you'll have it for the rest of the life, so make sure it's in a good place that won't interfere with future employment (some jobs don't like tattoos). Yes you can get it "removed" later, but that is VERY painful, is very expensive, and can leave a scar. So definitely think it through. I would definitely bring a friend to hold your hand!

Hehe, yeah, my mom's getting a tattoo the same day, and my favorite aunt's coming along with the both of us. So it'll be fun, I think.

And I was actually thinking the same thing for the third one. I'd like it on my forearm best, I think, and then if keeping it out of sight was a problem for employment, I could simply wear a long sleeve business shirt and it would hide it quite nicely.

My mom has a tattoo and she says it did not hurt near as much as people say it does. I like the look of the first and third one but like has been said the first one is a little big especially for a first tattoo.

I dunno. I may get a smaller version of the wings, but in the future. The phoenix is definately what I'm getting, though, probably on my forearm. I love the looks of all the colors in the phoenix.
