Male or female driving instructor? - July 11th 2009, 02:32 PM

*May be in the wrong place. Feel free to move it.*

I have just got my provisional licence and I can start driving lessons once I turn 17 on the 7th of August.

The main thing I am thinking of now is should I have a male or female driving instructor?

Which would your prefer and why? Do you prefer someone of the same sex or different? Does the stigma of rubbish female drivers affect your decision?

I have heard different opinions on both really so I am a bit stuck.

I would prefer female, just because I'd probably feel more comfortable or whatever. But to be honest, there are bad female drivers, and equally bad male drivers at the same time.

Besides, if they're an instructor, I assume they won't be bad regardless.

I wouldn't really care as long as they were fair in judging me.

I'd have a male. I think guys tend to explain things better, women just skim over it and expect you to keep up. Not that i've ever had a driving lesson - this is just what happens in general I think.

Honestly, it didn't make a difference to me. I had a male instructor because he had a good reputation/pass rate.
I tend to feel more patronised by women and therefore it was probably for the best that I did have a male instructor.
But yeah, I really don't think that it makes that much of a difference.

Here where I live you have no option. If you are female you get a female instructor.
If you are a male you get a male...

I failed my actual test twice. Then I got a really cool younger women that I felt comfortable with. I told her I got nervous, and she understood. I messed up on the test, but I'm a safe driver. She passed me.

I think If I got a male driver, I'd feel strange. It just wouldn't be comfortable being in a car alone with an older man.

I'd prefer female driving instructor, because I feel like guys would be quicker to anger, maybe it's just because my instructor is super nice.

I don't care at all. I think it's the individual rather than what gender they are. I actually hadn't even given the idea any thought until now.

Well I had a male instructor from my driver's ed class...he did not pass me...
Then I had a lady with spiked red hair who did at my actual exam xD
So who knows. I don't think it's really sex that defines it but eh. Whoever will pass me xDD

The sexual harassment thing is something I am thinking about, one of my friends was sexually harassed by a older male instructor.
That is the main thing that is putting me off a man.

The examiner who tests me will be decided by the DVLA and could be a male or female I will not get a say in that but I would like to feel comfortable while learning.
At the moment I am just going to ring the driving instructor and see who the instructor is for my area and try them and if I don't like them after a few lessons I can switch.

I put male because my instructor at the moment is male. We get on really well and can talk about anything really. I don't think I would have minded having either really, it just depends on whether you feel okay with the person and not feel intimidated. You can always change instructors if you don't like them. The best thing when you're learning is to feel okay with your instructor, it seriously helps a lot.

I have a female instructor and thats because she has a good reputation/pass rate.
And we get along really well and she teaches really well, as well.

If you're afraid of sexual harassment you could always have a parent sit in the car during the test, that's actually a fairly normal thing to do. Where I live I didn't have an instructor take me on the test, but a police officer. So I was like.. hm. better get it all right I passed fine though.

As for the sex of the instructor/officer I feel it comes down to personality much more than it does sex. I guess you may think preferable personalities may be more common in one of the sex's, but in reality you never really know. The off chance of sexual harassment shouldn't be the deciding factor when choosing male or female in my opinion - otherwise you're just avoiding men a whole lot. In fact.. who needs to choose? It'll be fine either way = ]

I'd choose a male instructor purely because I get along with males a lot better generally than females, especially if they're older.

Hiya,

yay for provisional licenses! haha

anywho, I had a female driver instructor with me when I took my test. It was alright. I don't think there were any males there which is why i got a women. But she was a bit bitchy. Idk if she was supposed to act that way because a lot of the women there at the DMV were like that.

So I guess I would prefer a male. I think it would be better.

Take care,

I'm male and I currently have a female instructor- she's lovely and in the end, her gender means naught to me...she just teaches me in a very gentle and simple way and that's all that matters.

I think males do pass more girls at the driving test. I didn't like the first two female examiners I had when I took my test. I honestly think that the whole "being intimidated" might have something to do with it. I even considered taking out my lip ring because I thought It might make them think I'm not responsible. When I got a younger examiner, she passed me.

I just want to clear up I am talking about the instructor here not the examiner. I don't get a say in the gender of the examiner.

I am just going to go with who ever I am given for now and then I can always change if I don't like them. I just don't want any one who will shout at me or get angry because I will cry.

As, well, I think the same thing goes for me. I'd just feel weird driving hours with a man I barely know.

i had a male instructor a couple of years ago, and he was good.
but he got ill so i needed another one.
and i saw another one with the same car driving in my area.
so i rang it and it was a man, and he was lovely.
and i passed on monday, so a male instructor worked just fine for me!

Re: Male or female driving instructor? - July 12th 2009, 09:05 PM

Back when I was learning how to drive, I always wanted a male instructor. For some reason, having a male authority figure, makes me feel more at ease than a female one. Just like when I took my road test, since I had a male one, I did absolutely fine and wasn't nervous at all. Same thing with doctors and how my doctor is a male.
