If you came across a poisonous snake.. - July 11th 2009, 11:32 PM

I know this is kind of a random question, but my reason behind it is that, living in Michigan there are rarely any poisonous snakes around, but we encountered one (it was the first time I ever saw one) a couple weeks ago, and my family immediately decided to kill it. So I'm just wondering, how many of you would have done the same?

Uh…no?

I think the question would be different if it went “So you are being attacked by a poisonous snake, do you kill it?” But just because I see one, or come across one does not mean I am going to kill it.

If it was going to attack me then I'd kill it...otherwise I'd just let it be.

I'd only kill it if it was going to attack me. Otherwise, I'd be scared that trying to kill it would just provoke it to attacking me when otherwise it probably would have left me alone if I left it alone. If that makes sense. ;s

If it attacked me or looked like it was going to, then yes. If it was just minding it's own business somewhere I'd probably just leave it be.

I would just let it be. Even though it could be a danger, but the possibilty of it coming around again, if you never saw it near your house before, is slim, it was probably just travelling about.

thus I would not kill it, I would just let it be.

If I had to kill it, I would. But I really think snakes are really neat creatures. I'm a fan. So I wouldn't unless It was my life on the line.

If I saw a poisonous snake I would scream and run. If it were in my home I'd call animal control, as long as everyone was safe. Of course, if it were trying to hurt someone I'd consider whacking it with a shovel, but I wouldn't just... kill it because it was there?

If I think I could do it without being bitten then fuck yes i'd kill it. Especially if it was near my house I wouldn't want it where it could bite my dog or family.

I'd prolly just run away like crazy.

If it was outside I wouldn't like to kill it unless it tried to hurt me first, I see that as totally unprovoked. Like someone coming upto me and hitting me in the face for no reason...just isnt needed, lol.

If it were WAY close to my home then tbh i'd just get a GIANT LONG stick and try to fling it over a wall or something. I'd still not kill it. Just get it away from my house.

If it were INSIDE my house...yeah i'd kill it. No question.

There are prolly a million snakes in my garden atm, right next to my house our meadow and it's sooo wild atm that it's perfect for grass snakes...I don't think i'll be going near it til it gets cut down.

If I saw it, I'd probably freeze up and then somehow manage to run in the opposite direction because if I tried to kill it, I probably wouldn't do a good job.

But, if I wasn't going to run off screaming in the opposite direction, I'd probably just leave it because if it's not going to try and hurt me, why should I hurt it? I'll just carry on my way and leave it to do whatever it was doing.

No, I wouldn't kill it unless it was chasing me or something(And how often do snakes chase people? Lol). I think you kill snakes by cutting off their heads, by the way. For some reason I just remember this story where this person killed a snake by cutting off its head with a shovel. Fortunately there's no poisonous snakes around here Except in the lower part of the province there's rattlesnakes.

BEST IMAGE EVER. I just imagined some person sitting in their backyard reading then suddenly a snake comes flying over their neighbour's fence.

I would also be one of the people running a mile. Besides, I wouldn't have a freaking clue how to kill a snake. And since I live in Ireland, where the snake population lives in stores, not really something I have to worry about.

My mom found a rattlesnake underneath our porch once and she was screaming like crazy so my dad went and killed it with a shovel. So if I saw a poisonous snake and my dad was somewhere near I'd just run and tell him to kill it. But if he wasn't anywhere around I'd just run and scream.

Like so many people said above, I'd only kill it if it was going to attack me. I've come across many rattlesnakes and they're completely docile when you leave them alone.

I've seen a rattlesnake before but I wouldn't kill it, even if it was going to attack me. I'd just get to a safe distance and call animal control if it was somewhere where other people or children might easily stumble across it.

I find snakes to be very beautiful creatures. So if I saw a poisonous one, I'd just go closer not to kill it but just to look at it in more detail. If I got too close and it lunged, I'd try to just avoid it but not kill it since it was my stupidity that resulted in me nearly being bit. I just stay around it still and let it go on its way.

However, if it were about to have a showdown with my dog, then I'd kill it. However, if it went near a park or small kids I would not kill it because it wouldn't be my problem, it's theirs. If they attempt to kill it but get bit, it's their problem due to their stupidity.

If a random person saw it and killed it while I was admiring it, then I'd take a shotgun to them and be on my way.

Aw, thing is, in Scotland, in theory we have a single species of poisonous snake, the european adder, but it'd be found in mountainous moorland, not in the cities, so I don't think I'd ever come across one.
But if I did, I'd probably just sit there and watch it, depending on it's natural inclination, maybe try to get it to trust me or be calm around me, deciding that I'm not a threat and stuff, and only when I know it's safe, I'd try and handle it.
If it was near a populated area with small children or something, then I'd call somebody more knowledegable than me to move it, but not before i got a few pictures ^^;
