I'm writing a book. - November 4th 2009, 08:36 PM

Hey guys.

I need your help

In creative writing class, we're writing novels (yeah, I know, novels. Scary) and by the end of November, we have to have 3 chapters handed in. This week we're working on Character stuff.

Thing is, I've got PERFECT names for EVERYONE in the book except the main character. I don't know what the heck to name this girl!

She's 15 or 16 years old (not sure which yet) and her mom died about a year ago. She's got a big sister and a little sister (one of the problems in the book is that she doesn't know how to talk to her older sister since she's so distant, and that her little sister is too young to really understand what's happened to their mom). She's like...one of those really innocent girl next door types of girls, but thing is, I want her to have a really fantastically pretty name. I thought Jocelyn at first, but I decided to make Jocelyn the name of another character. I want the name to be PERFECT and then have her really pulled back and angst ridden, ya know? I just don't know.

This is like picking out a wedding dress. When you put on the one, you know it's THE ONE. I'm going to be wracking my brain for this for another few days, I can tell :P.

Does anyone have any suggestions? My student teacher is bringing me a baby naming book tomorrow to look at.

For a character like that... I think Tasha. Short for Natasha. Good luck writing your novel... I wish we did that in school, I've had to write all of mine in my own time, which can be pretty hard.

It's no surprise that you'll soon forget about me

I'm really good with character names and I have quite a few. They are:
  • Autumn
  • Dawn
  • Mary
  • Angel
  • Rosalie
When I see those names, I kinda think of the character you described. Hope I helped.

Re: I'm writing a book. - November 5th 2009, 01:49 AM

I took a creative writing course last year where we had to write a novel too. Finding the right name is hard! I was so picky about that because it just HAD to fit with my character.

I found looking through online lists of baby names and choosing your favorites can really help. Then you can narrow your choices down, and see which name you can really picture for your character. Also, just a tip...don't chose a long name unless you give your character a nickname you can use to shorten it. Sometimes it gets awkward to keep writing out a long name in your novel. Shorter names tend to flow better. Good luck! :]
