Being Found On TeenHelp? - March 10th 2010, 05:53 AM

So recently I decided to type in my e-mail address into the google search bar, just to see how many times I popped up. I didn't see too much, but then I realized that anyone could find me on the internet with my e-mail address and locate me on TeenHelp.

Now, I think it's perfectly okay to be on this site and seek out advice from other teens and share my problems.

But a few years back I was talking to my cousin when he mentioned something I had never told him before (It wasn't personal or anything) and I asked him how he knew about it. He said that his dad did an internet search on his kids and me to see where we were on the internet.

This.scares.me.

Now, I appreciate my uncle keeping tabs on us and making sure that we're safe, but there are just some things you don't want your family to know too much about. I would hate for someone I know to find me on here and read my personal problems.

So I got a new e-mail address, specifically for this site, and replaced the old one.

Problem solved? I'm not sure. Because whenever I type in my regular e-mail address in the google bar, it still comes up with teenhelp, even though I changed it.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? More over, does anyone else have this problem or this paranoia?

I don't know how to fix your problem, but i actually recently went through the same thing. I don't want just ANYONE finding this really. I searched my photobucket in google, and all my Teen Help posts came up because my signature here usually has pictures linked to my photobucket. I deleted my photobucket and the posts still show up on google. Yes, I'm the paranoid type, but i just hope no one decides to google me! I hate google lol

I guess we just have to remember, and keep in mind: there is NO privacy on the internet.

Google does not update its records automatically. With billions of web pages changing every day, it would be impossible to do that if you think about it. Instead, they will periodically 'reindex' each page to check for changes. This means that if you have removed something from TeenHelp it will eventually be removed from Google's records, though this could take several weeks, or even several months. We have no control over what information Google chooses to store about us, or for how long. This is one reason why we don't recommend that users share details such as their names or email addresses so openly on our site. Incidentally, if your email address is only listed in your profile, then changing your privacy settings will be sufficient to stop Google from indexing it in the first place. Just change each of your settings that you want to hide to "Registered Members". http://www.teenhelp.org/profile.php?do=privacy (Of course, this doesn't help you much now, but in the future perhaps.)

I doubt anyone will find me as I use an e-mail that no one could guess. I do find it funny though you can google just your username and how many sites it'll show your on

I just tried it, and its true... searching a persons email can lead you to every site that they've registered on with those details.

This is fine if you don't care... but if you're posting confidential stuff (or stuff you don't want your family to see), all your parents would have to do (if they're the type who read your SMS, emails etc because they're over-protective) is search your email in google and uncover your secrets.

As Rob said, you can hide your email address, and Google will, in time... remove it from Indexing.

I don't like to whizz in people's pockets, so I will always give you truth. I'm opinionated, so take what I say with a cup of salt.

I've never had this problem. I made all new accounts for teenhelp. A new email, new MSN/Yqhoo, new Skype. All a different name so I could be tracked. Granted, now my mom knows about the site because I told her, but it was a necessary evil. Now I just post in the staff forums and LH/HL so she can't spy on me.

Re: Being Found On TeenHelp? - March 10th 2010, 04:30 PM

I just googled searched two of my email addresses and nothing came up except bebo. And even then it wasn't my bebo, just the bebo home page.
I even wrote in my email address then 'teenhelp' afterwards.

I'm not sure if this is because I do not show my email address on my th profile??

I do remember a few years ago my friend found my profile on here. Luckily I trusted him, but still.

Weird, I typed in both my email addresses and nothing came up for either.. hm. I's just make sure all your privacy settings are up so that others can't see you, etc. Sorry about this. But people probably won't google your email adress anyways!

This is why you should use fake everything! Fake email, fake name. Yup. No one is going to find me!

Re: Being Found On TeenHelp? - March 10th 2010, 09:40 PM

I decided to search my email address once before, and several of my TH conversations have come up. I suppose that's why I shouldn't give my email address out via VM conversations, but oh well. The way I see it is that I highly doubt anyone is going to be googling my email address, and if anyone were to want to, they would not have my email address to begin with.

Lol, I googled my email address and the 4 things came up on google. TH, TH, TH & TH,
I don't think I'm particularly bothered. I'm not ashamed of TH and if people don't like what they see then they shouldn't of been nosey. ;]
TH is a place where I can come and be myself. Its better than a whole lot of other things I can think of..

Unless you have specifically put your email address on your public profile you will not appear in Google results from it. TeenHelp masks everybody's email address when they register - with the default registration options your email address is completely inaccessible to the public via any means.

Yep. I just googled all my emails and nothing. I periodically google-stalk myself just to see where I am and what people can see of me, just in case.

I think if TH showed up, I would probably have to figure out how to get it off because I would not feel comfortable with some of the stuff I've posted on here, but mostly, thanks to the reset--it would still be ok.

I tried googling my email and NOTHING, not even this site came up. However, all somebody would need is my handle and they could probably find me here

Haha. I Googled my email address and the first two things were TeenHelp.
But there's no privacy on the internet. Keep that in mind with whatever you put out there. Since, once it is, it never fully is off the web.

Just don't give our your actual name, information, or e-mail adress to anyone online on any forum at anytime. When I type mine in, nothing comes up, because I don't put it in anywhere on forums.

I googled mine, and nothing came up, which is pretty weird. Well, an old, old thread came up, but that was it. Just mark your addresses as private guys, and you'll have nothing to worry about.

nothing comes up when i type my email in. i guess it's because i don't put it publicly on my profile on here. i'm glad though, because i wouldn't really appreciate being stalked on here. although tbh i doubt i have any friends that would go to the bother of google searching me anyways but who knows..

Well, I have changed my e-mail (specifically made one up for this site) that no one knows about. That's the only means that anyone can really find me. I think. Regardless, I still come up on the search when I type in my previous e-mail. But I think some of the links disappeared.

I'm not really worried about anyone finding me. It's my uncle who made me paranoid in the first place- because he searched me years ago and found me on Bebo.
