Valentine's Day - February 10th 2011, 05:34 PM

What do you guys think of Valentine's Day? If you're in a relationship, is it something you look forward to, or does the commercialism put you off? If you're single, is it frustrating, or do you twist the rules to accomodate for other types of love? (e.g. cards and presents for friends and family)

I will definitely be making the most of it this year, but I'm not inclined to spend loads of money, simply because shop gifts aren't as personal as something I could make.

It's not a massively big deal...you can show you love someone any day of the year. I do think it's cute, though

I'm alright with it I suppose. It might be a bigger deal to me if I was in a serious relationship or something like that.

I don't care about it one way or the other. I think the people who rail against it the most generally have someone specific in mind that they want to spend it with.

Re: Valentine's Day - February 10th 2011, 08:40 PM

I think at one point it could have meant something special, but honestly, why do we need a day where everyone in a relationship buys the other gifts? Are we not creative enough to do this by ourselves?
I've never been a fan, and I've been in a relationship for a few valentines days and point blank refused to do anything. I'd give my partner gifts of my love when I feel like it, not when society says I should.
Plus so much pink everywhere makes me slightly nauseated

This year it will hurt for me.

To me it's just another day of the year xD. Idk, I've just never really got into it like easter or christmas for example.

I think it's stupid that we have a day where we show whoever we are with, if we're with anyone, that we love them. Shouldn't we be doing that anyway? I mean, I do take part in it if I'm with someone but I still think it's just a bit silly.

It's stupid, pointless, and a waste of money.
If you love someone you love them. You shouldn't have to buy them candies, flowers, cards, and teddy bears to show you love them.

It's a great way to show friends, family, and loved ones you care about them. I'm not the biggest fan of the commercialized stuff (except the candy hearts with the sayings) but heartfelt cards, hugs, and words always make a difference. I mean, so many people are sad/depressed - just look at this site, or sixbillionsecrets... taking some time to make a card or say "You're awesome" "I love you" etc. can't be a bad thing, can it?

Idk, just my poorly worded two cents.

Re: Valentine's Day - February 12th 2011, 07:55 PM

Ugh, I just think it's silly. I mean to be honest the original idea of having a day to celebrate love is nice (if a little cheesy ) and I won't lie in saying I would be disappointed if I didn't get to see my boyfriend on Monday but I think it is so silly that people, especially single people get upset over this. I mean really. Especially people under twenty five...I mean we're only little, who cares?? Being single is fun anyway. You can stress about Valentine's day when you're older...there's plenty of time. I've already seen threads on TH and had single friends complaining to me about how this day upsets them.....why are they letting it do that?? It might be slightly more commercialised in the US but in Ireland you can easily forget it's the 14th of february if you're not reminded by someone. It's just another day. I personally hate the cheesy romanticness of it all...when I was sixteen my boyfriend of the time gave me a rose and I actually cringed, although to be honest as I'm getting older I'm less repulsed by that idea but I mean really...the idea of someone showering me with rose petals and serenading me on my way to a lecture or something would not appeal to me at all.

Sorry for going on such an (unstructured) rant, but what really bothers me is that people who are single let this day upset them. Cop on guys.....like it's just not a big deal

I'm not really fussed, tbh... it's just a day for my mum to get me little presents to make up for my being single xD

I like Valentine's Day. Mostly just because I like to have a party.

I'm pretty apathetic about the day itself. However, the next day is great; all the stores have discount chocolate.

Re: Valentine's Day - February 13th 2011, 06:34 PM

I am in a relationship but neither of us are really too fussed about Valentines Day. I mean, yes, we bought eachother cards. But this year we agreed on no presents.

We're both working Valentines Day so we went out for a meal on Friday night (but we do that most Friday nights anyway!!)

Its cute but I'm not gonna get stressed over it!
