Are you a young person struggling to cope?

Maverick Television are making a new documentary series looking into young people’s mental and emotional health - including phobias, anxiety, depression, stress, OCD, body image, and behaviour and anger issues.

We hope that it will be a landmark series on this subject, shedding new light on an area of health which is often disregarded by the media and highlighting the need for more support for families whose children are experiencing such problems.

We aim to cover a broad range of mental health and behavioural issues in the programme, from problems such as hair-pulling, to OCD, tourettes, anxieties and phobias to conditions such as depression and body dysmorphia. Hopefully the programme will be representative of the many and varied issues which are affecting young people with regard to mental health in the UK today and will cover subjects that families from a broad cross-section of society may identify with. The programmes will aim to raise awareness of the conditions affecting young people, as well as their families and of some of the help and treatment available. We want to humanise these stories by getting to know the whole family, how a child’s mental health impacts that family, and how ultimately, with the right care, support and understanding, the young person can feel positive about the future.

We are in contact with a network of specialists, institutions and centres in relation to the documentary – for example the Anna Freud Centre, Rethink, The Brandon Centre in London, and are currently in talks with Maudsley Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry (King's College London).

All of the families taking part in the programme will have the opportunity, if they wish, for their child to be assessed and treated by a team of expert clinicians or by recommended therapists in their area depending on the child’s needs, their geographical locations and circumstances . We will also ensure there is an after care package in place so the families feel assured their child will continue receiving treatment once the filming has stopped.

Maverick Television has a solid reputation in producing sensitive, carefully crafted films which often deal with difficult subjects, but always in a respectful and accessible manner. ‘Sectioned’, a documentary recently shown on BBC4 won Best Documentary at the Mind Awards, it was a powerful documentary which, for the first time, followed three people who had been sectioned on their journey through the mental health system.
