PJs all day -
April 2nd 2011, 08:56 AM
My mental health nurse seems to think me not getting dressed everyday and wearing my PJs is a massive problem
Am I the only one who doesn't see the big deal? If I don't plan going anywhere it's fine, if I want to go somewhere I get dressed. I don't see the drama.

Since I'm unemployed/not in college this is a lot
She even said to be if I want to be comfortable around the house then put my tracksuit bottoms and hoodie on. I sometimes wear them to bed when I'm cold

Hey
![]() I will admit on weekends or holidays when I don't have anything planned I often have pajama days However, because you could easily or maybe ever are doing it practically every day your not encouraging yourself to do anything to help your depression. And I know you can sit there and think well what the hell is me getting changed going to help my depression but I have learnt that actually just getting dressed, having a wash, putting on some make up and doing your hair can actually make you generally feel a bit better and can encourage you to be more out going. I hope that made sense ![]() Jessie. ![]() Three little birds sat on my window, and they told me I don't need to worry. I wear pajamas when I'm not going out. Like, right now. I've been wearing pajamas all day.
But, like Jess said, whether you realize it or not, simple things such as getting dressed, brushing your hair, all that jazz...they can make a small impact on how you feel. So, that's why she thinks you should change into regular clothes. Also, you might motivate yourself to go out when you weren't originally planning on going out if you have regular clothes on. Changing just...opens random opportunities that you wouldn't expect to be linked :P ![]() Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance. PM me anytime <3 |

Re: PJs all day -

I think the issue is if you do it a lot, it suggests poor hygiene and lack of basic self-care because you stay in the same clothing. I don't wear my PJs around the house for the simple reason my night clothing is underwear and shirt (sometimes no shirt), and my parents aren't particularly thrilled to see me going downstairs in my underwear and/or t-shirt. However, at university, some people do come wearing stuff they wore the night previous. I don't see a problem with it as long as you don't do it very often as it suggests poor hygiene, lack of self-care and little motivation to do anything.
I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Re: PJs all day -

I love staying in my pjs all day, and I tend to do it a lot also. There's nothing really wrong with it, but I have noticed that on days when I wear my pjs all day, I'm a lot less likely to do things. If that makes sense. Like other users before me have said, getting dressed is kind of a pick me up. It gives you more energy and makes you want to go out and do more things.
So I also understand why she says that. Maybe you should try getting dressed up every few days, and see if it helps you some. =] You might find that you like it. |

In mental hospitals, they even take note of if you've changed into clothes or not. It just tends to reflect that you care more about how you look [and essentially, how you feel about yourself] if you change out of your pjs.
I'm in no way saying that a day here or a day there is a big deal. Like I said, I do it too. It's when it is an every day thing that it can be a problem. Just try to change into regular clothes for a short period of time, like...two weeks. I feel pretty confident you'll notice a difference, even if it is a small one.

I get why it could be an issue, but personally I usually stay in my PJs when I'm not going out.
I'm in them right now, actually. But I do think you should wear your cool new shirt.

If I'm not going anywhere then I don't change.I find no reason to?
I don't sleep nude or just in my underwear, I wear pants/shorts and a shirt. So it's not like I'm walking around my house in my underwear. I just think why should I change? I'm more comfortable in my PJs, and I'm not trying to impress anyone or anything. If I do go out, then I change and make myself look presentable. I don't feel depressed by not changing? It actually makes me happier? Because I feel like I can relax more? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I do this too...unless I have an appointment that day or I have to go somewhere I stay in my PJs. It's just more comfortable to me and I don't think it affects my depression because I'm always depressed whether I get day clothes on or not.

I find that getting dressed even if I'm not going anywhere helps perk me up. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, as I teach myself and I don't have a job as of yet so I feel depressed from not leaving the house much. She has a pretty good point.
Try it, see how it works.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

I've noticed that when I do go through stages of wearing PJs all day for a number of days in a row, I'm alot less productive. I think that the act of getting dressed and prepared to go out even if you arent going out does alot to your mood and your productivity. Might want to consider this when thinking about it.
When all your friends have come and gone, And the sun no longer shines, And the happiness for which you long is washed away like an ocean's tide, When all the hard times outweigh the good, And all your words are misunderstood, When the day seems lost from the start You must follow your heart, You must follow your heart. |

Theres nothing wrong with staying in pjs all day on ocassion. But I can also see where the health nurse is coming from. I'm totally an advocate for lazy days spent lounging around in pajamas but that being said its also important not to find yourself in that slump of wandering around lazily in pajamas moping around constantly. It cna make a huge difference just getting up and getting yourself dressed and ready for the day. It might be the deciding factor of if you choose to go out and do something or not. If you're dressed up it generally makes you feel better about yourself too. At least thats what I find. I'm a lot more likely to go out when someone suggests it if I'm already dressed etc.

I don't find it weird. I'm in my pj's all the time too, unless I have to go to Uni or somewhere 'special'. If I'm just going to the shops I just throw on a hoodie. PJ's are so comfy, it's hard to part with them.

I do have pajama days
But as many others have said, that makes me feel lazy. Just getting dressed, brushing my hair, etc makes me feel motivated to go do something. Since I usually spend my weekend mornings half-conscious and immobile.

I have pajama days, but when I wake up, I usually change into a different pair of pajamas so I feel more awake and I'll make myself look presentable should I need to answer the door or anything like that.

Personally, I don't like staying in my Pjs all day, I like to get dressed as quickly as possibly...BUT I don't see the problem with it at all!
Sometimes I think these mental health people look way to deep into things to be honest. I have to get 'counselling' for anorexia, yet they always think that me having 'separation anxiety' is a massive issue, yes its a issue but ive lived with it since before I can remember, and it's got NOTHING what-so-ever to do with food. I hate counselling enough already, and I know I don't want it, but they bring up every little thing in my life and turn it upside down! Also, they try and tell me I am restricting myself because I didn't want CORN ON THE COB one night! Umm....well I always thought corn was really healthy...?? I ended up having ice-cream instead...if I was restricting I wouldn't have had the ice-cream, I would have had the corn! GRRR I dont mix well with these people! I am a Proud Kiwi =)

I agree, I think they do look too deeply into things. I think she thinks there's an underlying reason as to why I have loads of gay male friends
she always seems to bring up I have a lot of gay friends.
