My resignation - January 6th 2009, 03:30 AM

Since the site went down and this is important I am putting it back up again...

I joined teenhelp back in 1998, not long after it was founded and brought to life by Branden Thomas.

[Incidentally, Branden now lives here in the UK near to me and we hang out quite a lot... he's living at my ex Sam's house because they're friends too ;p Weird, eh? Anyway...]

I have been through MANY site changes and seen hundreds of staff members come and go. Some of them stick around for a long time and become friends and others disappear never to be seen again. However they decide to end their time with the site I hope they took away good experiences and remember us well.

I sometimes happen across old staff members and we relive memories from years ago. Nobody will remember a member/admin we had back in 2000-2002 called S.K.O.G.? He came to visit me back in September and we reminisced about various things. Teenhelp is mostly a long forgotten memory to him and he never visits the site anymore but he remembered some fun times, as did I.

There have been some sad times too. The death of Sheri (and then her mother 6 months later) was a terrible shock to the site and the news coverage that followed afterwards was pretty surreal. This was followed by the death of Kiota/Anna, a loyal staff member who had been with us since she was 13/14 years old. Tragedies in this line of "work" happen but it still doesn't make them any less shocking.

I have found in the last couple of years (yes, years) that I do not fully participate in the site as I once did. I think this is mostly because at any time the site could disappear, go down, go away, be sold and it is not nice and secure with the same owner like it was when I first came here. I don't believe that Winston has any intention of selling the site anytime soon but still, it sits in the back of my mind and it makes me feel quite unable to contribute to the site like I once did years ago.

Another reason is because I am quite frankly not getting any younger! I am 24 years old now and although I have been able to communicate with those younger than myself, it is getting harder and I feel less able to empathise with some situations as I once did. These reasons are entirely personal and probably not entirely rational but hey, that's how I feel now.

Some of you will know, most of you won't, that I am currently training to be a social worker. A lot of people are like "what! social worker! are you crazy?" In short, yes I am but it's OK. Teenhelp has prepared me for what I am going to be facing out in the "real world" of problems, disputes and other people's lives. On teenhelp we can only act as a temporary stop to a much bigger problem (well, in some cases we can fix them straight away but that is definitely not the majority!) but as a social worker I can put into place solutions that I do not have the power to do on here. I very much look forward to this new pro-active way of helping people!

So, as of January you will see a lot less of me around here. I have been cutting down the time I spend around the site and keeping it to a minimum. I currently have several big projects on at University and I just don't have the time to dedicate like I once did.

I wish all of you the best and hope you will stay in contact with me after I have gone from the site. I will likely keep a member account and check in from time to time but my admin'ing days are very definitely nearly over.

Keeses :coffee2:

Social work, girrrrl are you crazy?! :P Actually, I find alot of THers want to be social workers. Must have something to do with the site -shrugs-

It'll be sad to see you go - since my original account I can remember your name and your posts. It's like you are a piece of the site itself, and I think many (who are closer to you) will miss you.

Good luck with social work, life and all that's in between.

Even though I read this the first time you posted, I never actually replied because me and goodbye's don't normally mix! I know we don't know each other personally, but we have exchanged PM's in the past and it'll be sad to see you go - you're a piece of the furniture here!

Good luck with all that's to come - I'm sure you're going to make a great social worker

Ooh, so very. What a coincidence. :x

Please do take care, Helen. Although we have never been too particularly close, you have always been here as somewhat of a motherly figure to me. It will be so awkward without you, but our time comes eventually. I hope to keep in touch with you. <3

I already said it once but.. you'll be missed.

Drop in now and then because otherwise you'll just end up with a crap load of stalkers wondering how you have been and that? That would be creepy. Can you imagine a TH brigade outside your window? Exactly.

I did read this the first time you posted it but I did want to wish you well again. You've done a lot for TeenHelp over the large amount of time that you've been here. It is obvious that you have made an impact in the lives of many, many people. That's definitely something to be proud of. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide to do in the future. I'm sure you'll do an excellent job.

All the best and take care.

I'll say it again :

You will be missed. You have always been what seemed like a permanent fixture to this site and the people on it, and we all knew we could count on you when the chips were down. You helped me through a couple of really rough times, and I'll always be grateful to you for that.

You're a wonderful friend, mentor, role model, and woman, and you're going to help so many more people throughout your life. I wish you only the best of luck in everything you do.

Sincerely, K

Red face Re: My resignation - January 26th 2009, 03:26 AM

Helen,

It's been a long time since we talked. This is Jake (inziga, cidbit...).

I stopped being an admin on this site a couple years ago just after the startling transfer from Brandon to Winston and the reset of the forums back then when the database went with Adam to HT.

Since then I've stopped in every so often to check on the site and make sure it was still ticking. I too have always had that nagging fear that something could happen after the domain change, and it's times like this when the site resets that I realize that the time we put into it is easily destroyable.

I've been sitting here for a while thinking how many times the site's data has been lost. For the forums, it's been X times.... from PHPbb v1 to v2, then when the database failed with version 2, then with the transfer to invisionboard, the domain ownership change, and finally this time. With each of those times (excluding your time away during the Invisionboard years) you had anywhere from 1 thousand to 3 thousand posts. All in all, I'd say you've had 6,000+ posts on this site which are lost to time, and countless hours gone as well. This isn't even counting the hours you gave to Helplink and articles.

The great thing about it though is the posts weren't the valuable thing you gave this site.... it was the help you provided through them... and although it's easy for old-sters like us to remember the ebb and flow of this site since it first started, the important part was never who was running it; it was the people on it. Your participation in this site gave more than history will ever tell, but I believe in my heart that the sheer amount of people you've helped has rippled through society immeasurably.... I say this because I was one of those people.

Thank you so much for what you did for this site, and more importantly what you did for people like me. You may be moving on in your life now to even bigger things, but your help will not be forgotten by the people who received it.

Take care, and even though I'm across the ocean, if you ever need me my info is just a click away.

-Jake

Helen I love you!
I've been on this site for a few years now, and you have ALWAYS been around.. It's going to take some getting used to not having you.

You'll be great as a social worker, I know you will.
I hope you'll stay in touch with me through here/myspace so you can watch Logan grow up through pictures and hear about all of his little stories that are in store.

Best of luck with your wonderful future!!
