Question Disrespect - December 1st 2011, 08:02 AM

Where is there a line that can be crossed to disrespect someone... Or is there not one???
For example if someone sexually abused you , do you have to respect them? If yes to what extent?

You don't have to do anything. No one deserves respect; respect is earned. If you receive something that you didn't earn, then you have no obligation to respect that person. Typically, you should respect everyone because we are all human living in one world together, but it's the things that people do that cause you to lose your respect for someone. It does vary when we talk about politics, law enforcement, and what not, but when we're referring to an individual doing something directly to us that we didn't earn...that's where you, typically, could make a rational response to lose respect for that person.

You don't have to respect anyone if you don't want to for whatever reason. There are many individuals whom I show no respect to regardless what they do to me and for the most part, they show no respect to me in return. For everyone else I don't know, I give them the same amount of respect. To get more respect, people have to earn it and I expect the exact same, I'll gain respect from others if I earn it. There's no objective universal line that has to be crossed to lose respect for someone, although I think most people would agree they wouldn't show respect to someone who sexually abused them.

For myself, I don't give a crap if someone whom I don't know insults me. It's not going to make me lose respect for them nor will they gain respect because I'll probably find it funny and everyone likes a good laugh. I won't explain what the individuals did whom I have no respect for because they are extremely long stories that I cant be bothered to type out.

Moral of the story is, give everyone the same baseline amount of respect and give additional respect to those who earned it. There's no objective measure of when to not give respect as it comes down to your rationale. Ideally, let small silly things (i.e. petty schoolyard insults) fly by and don't get worked up over them but majors life-altering issues such as sexual abuse are immediate grounds for altering your respect for the person.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

What a lot of people believe, or act, is that you shouldn't respect someone that doesn't respect you.

This is also the Satanic view, but that's apparently evil.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.
