Could you do it?? - January 26th 2012, 06:43 PM

Could you give up your internet life? I don't mean revert to the 1970s and be internet-less. I mean could you give up the life you have online, your social groups and friends? And I'm not talking about the ones you're dating or that lives in the same town or go to the same school as you. Or people you've met over the years in real life. They don't count, obviously.

I don't think I could do it. I've tried several times, but have always found myself going somewhere new or IMing an online friend to catch up.

Over the past seven years, the internet has become a huge part of my life. It began way back on this television board (defunct now), in April of 2005 and here I am on Teen Help today.

As I said in chat, I can't do it. I can't ;eave TH at this point. It is everything to me. It is the only thing that is keeping me sane right now.

I dont think I could do it. Not for the fact of people on the internet I dont know because I dont really have many friends on the internet. I live several states away from where I was born and where all my friends I grew up with for 18 years. I need the internet to communicate with them.

I edited my original post for better clarification. I'm sorry I didn't exclude (include) the people you know in real life.

I dont think I could. Internet forums and places like TH are my escape when my real family and friends get a bit too much or when it feels everyone is nagging at me! Its a nice feeling to be able to get away from all that for a few (well ok, several) hours!

I definitely don't think I could do it, especially when it comes to TH. This place is my safe haven and I wouldn't be able to give that up if I tried.

I couldn't do it. I've met too many awesome people here to give it up, or any other online friends!

I can't do it. I could probably do about for about a week or longer, but not for life.

Well I'm definitely not as in to the internet as I used to be, when I had a lot of online friends. But I do use it a lot, mostly for facebook. I would get extremely bored without it and lose the contact with family/friends I don't see often, but I think I could live without it..if I tried...really hard. xD

Re: Could you do it?? - January 27th 2012, 01:23 AM

I probably could if I absolutely had to. I have my books

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

Yes, and I think Internet addiction is a serious problem among teenagers, a problem that needs to be addressed.

I couldn't. I'm too nosy. I get SO much information off of the internet :3 And also about people. I find out their feelings too and I just like knowing things and the internet helps :3

I think that if I wanted to I could do it for the most part. But I don't wan't to and I don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't take over your life too much in a negative way.

Re: Could you do it?? - January 27th 2012, 02:36 AM

I suppose I probably could. But would I? Heck no. Some of the folks I've made connections with online, they've become some of the most important people in my life. Hard to explain and hard to understand, but the truth. And I can't say I'd bail on em just because we'd never met face to face.
That being said, I also think it's super important to spend time offline, to have a balance of sorts. I don't always have the best hold on that, but it's something I'm conscious of.

Re: Could you do it?? - January 27th 2012, 03:10 AM

I would miss my online friends dearly. They've helped me through so much, and so no, I don't think I could ever turn my back on them completely. I think that if you regulate the time you spend on the computer, then the internet isn't a problem in itself. It's a part of life now, and that's something we as society need to accept: times are changing. I certainly agree that too much of internet is a bad thing. If you're completely withdrawing from real life, then that's a problem. But in moderation, it's fine.

A life... without the Internet?! Count me out! haha
I generally can't imagine me without the internet. I could live without Facebook, but Wiki does my assignments, Twitter helps me stalk celebs, this helps me be sane. The internet is my lifeline!
