Society - December 15th 2013, 07:54 PM

What really annoys me about society is how the nicest, most accepting people i.e. the people on teenhelp are the ones made to feel so bad about themselves they self harm, they develop ed's, even attempt suicide. The people that are the most culturally and socially accepting are abused, whereas the homophobic racist egotistical assholes are the popular people.
If you go on the lbgt forums for instance, anyone posting about their sexuality will be told "it doesnt matter, just do whatevers comfortable". No one cares if you are gay, bi, trans or anything else. Its where everyone can feel comfortable and accepted no matter how you define yourself. Yet society means that anyone remotely different from the norm is isolated and demonised. As someone posted the other day, I think it was 42% of transgender people attempt suicide. 42%.
Anyway, thats my rant over and done with :P

Well, I guess you're right Dan; and the people on TeenHelp are definitely amazing, I agree. In saying that, there are good people in society, and I would hope that even if they do face issues, they are able to overcome them. That's why TH is here.
As for 'the homophobic racist egotistical assholes' - they're people too. So, as annoying as they can be, do try to see them as people; they can change (then society with them) - lead by example.

So, you're right that society is far from perfect, yes...but do remember that you can change things for the better.

Skittlify me up...

I guess you're right Adam, its just I think the good people are too few and far between, and often outnumbered by those that aren't :/
However, they are concentrated here which is what makes this site so great

Hey Dan,

I can totally see where you're coming from. I think you'll find that the people who use TeenHelp are so accepting, compassionate, and empathetic towards others because a lot of the users themselves have struggled or are struggling with issues like mental illness, eating disorders, self harm, etc. Once you've experienced something for yourself, you usually gain a true understanding of what it's like to go through these things.

That being said, not everyone has to experience difficult times to be empathetic and caring towards others. I think that a lot of people in society may not be accepting or understanding of issues because they've never faced the issue in their own life or they just don't have the proper knowledge. (I know this is not the case for everyone, but it may be for some members of society.) For example, someone may make jokes about self harm. They have probably not dealt with self harm themselves or had to watch someone they love struggle with it. They may not really understand why people self harm to begin with and therefore they don't understand why a joke about self harm is hurtful.

Anyways, I'm not trying to defend the people who do hurt others. I just think it's important to see why they may behave the way they do. In terms of things we can do, I think continuing to provide education on these issues can help make the world a more understanding and better place!

Take care. :]

I do agree with you about most people being judgemental because they don't understand the issues they joke about, but I also think its ignorant to act that way about something you know nothing about.

Anyway, thanks for replying

I want to add to your dark statistics, but I don't want to further your dark thoughts. I know exactly how you feel about how hopeless things can get. Just know that there are good people, even with all of the assholes. Often times, the media portrays the world as a darker and scarier place than it actually is.
