Angry I lost my health insurance - October 4th 2017, 07:08 PM

I had Medicaid for the last 5 years or so and when I went to see my specialist for my wrist yesterday they alerted me that my insurance wasn't going through so I called them and they said since I turned 19 that I was dropped. I was told when I first got Medicaid that I would be on it until I turned 26 and they couldn't explain why that wasn't the case anymore. I didn't get any warning, no notice in the mail, no email, no phone call, nothing. I cannot afford to be without insurance. I'm taking medication again which is pricey without insurance, I go to therapy at least once a week, I wear glasses, I see a psychiatrist and I frequently get sick. And because the governor of my state didn't expand Medicaid I can't qualify based solely on income (even though I would). The only way I would be able to get Medicaid again is if the Social Security Administration decides to accept my mental illness as a disability but I don't have very high hopes for that to work out. I have no idea what I'm gonna do. Does anyone have any ideas??? I need to figure something out fast before my month supply of meds runs out.

Are you currently in the process of applying for social security?

Do you have a job that offers benefits to full time employees? Or do you work full time and make enough that you could try and purchase through the Healthcare exchange?

I don't know a lot about this but if you are currently in the process of applying for social security I know there is a way to get them to make a determination, faster, due to extenuating circumstances. Not certain how that process works though but I might be able to Google it or something.

No I haven't started the application process because I'm worried if I do and I am eligible I won't be able to work anymore since I read information on their website and the jist of what I understood is if I'm receiving disability benefits that I won't be able to work anymore.
I am not working full time and even f I was I haven't worked with the company long enough to be offered health insurance.
I really don't know a lot about insurance and what to do so I'm honestly just confused and worried.

From what I know about ssi and ssdi, you are able to work. With ssi, you are only allowed to make a certain amount... I don't think you can make much more than 1,000 (it's considered the gainful activity level). With ssdi, an advocate told me I could work part time, so about 20 hours a week.

However, I am not sure if you can be working and apply to get ssdi/ssi. There might be someone who has more knowledge.

There is a lady that works for my mom who gets a medicaid insurer but she just pays a certain, small sum, of money per month. What she did was go through the Health Insurance Marketplace and got it. I believe that they go by your income and how much you can pay for the insurance. I know that here in Ohio they have prescription programs as well where you get your medicine directly through the drug company at either a low rate or no charge, I think it's called the prescription assistance program, since you're worried about your meds. There's also a free clinic around the area where I live, you could look into those. My clinic has a partnership with a mental health agency that I used to go to.

There's lots of help out there if you don't have insurance, you just need to look . I can help you out some if you need it.

Resilient
1. (of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions.
2. (of a substance or object) able to recoil or spring back into shape after bending, stretching, or being compressed.

We all possess resilience, we just need to realize it.

Medicaid does have a buy-in program that allows people who don't make a lot of money but also don't meet the requirements for medicaid to keep medicaid. The payments are usually really small. But, in a state that didn't expand medicaid...I am not sure how that works.

Fallon, try googling Medicaid buy in program [insert state] and see if you can find anything. I am pretty sure different states have different requirements since the buy-in program is voluntary.

I know that open enrollment for health insurance is starting soon. I believe it starts November 1. So, you might want to look into that as well. Idk really know how great the plans will be or how affordable due to a number of factors but it might be something you could try out.

Also, I do agree that free clinics and then prescription help is possible. I know there is website that helps...not sure how it works though but it might be worth looking into. I think you can type in 'Prescription Medication Help' and you might be able to find some stuff. Also, I know that Walmart has the ability to give out some prescriptions for really cheap so it's possible there are other pharmacies in your area who have similar plans. I know you can look up walmarts prescription prices online which might help you determine if any of the medications you take are there.

I looked up the Medicaid buy in for my state and basically I have to be considered disabled by SSA and I can't make more than $65/month (I make around $500/month) so I guess that isn't an option. But I will look in to prescription help.

I'm not sure if it's the same down in the US as it is here, but you can be on a parents insurance until you're 25 if you're a full time student. Again, I'm not sure if that's the same down there, it might be worth looking into? Let me know
