MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 04:29 PM

Eugh, I found out that I have to have one of them in a few weeks. I'm not worried about anything because I don't think I have anything wrong in my head but...should I be worried about lying in a massive machine?!

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 04:33 PM

I had one because of my back and I was scared but it was nothing. Just pretty much lying there, listening to what I was being told and then listening to the noisy machine and it was over before I knew it.

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 04:50 PM

Hey there,

I had to have one after I was in a car crash. And I was a little scared it was nosy and weird but it was scary at all. I fell asleep actually I mean what else are you supposed to do lol. It just kinds lulled me to sleep.

So you have nothing to worry about all you do is lie really still for like 30 min I think it was I cant really remember. Oh and make sure not to wear anything with metal in it. I did that and thought I had taken all of it off but I got in there and they pulled me back out 5 min later and we had to start all over again.

30min?? Jeez! It takes that long to take a picture of my brain?? I'm not scared of it, I just don't really want to go because I get this vibe that something is going to go wrong.

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 05:41 PM

I've had three ...
It only takes so long because they take the pictures from several different angles, so you get some that take like 30 seconds and some that last 10 minutes!! It is just noisy, and make sure you lay completely still, I moved for one of them just like a twitch and they had to do it again - another whole 10 minutes of stillness.

You can't move mountains by whispering at them.

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 05:48 PM

Because I have scoliosis, I had to have one that was 3 hours long. The bed you lay on is not comfortable at all! Just lay still and try to fall asleep even though that is sometimes impossible with all the noise. Good Luck!

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 05:53 PM

i'm rather the MRI expert seeing as i've had 7 in total, will be 8 in a few weeks time. seriously, it's nothing to be worried about. take a CD with you and they'll play it and you can listen to it on the headphones. they'll give you a panic button which you can press at any time if you need to get out of the machine and they'll get you out. seeing as you're having it on your head it may well be that your whole body won't be in the machine, and it'll just be your head.. but it varies from place to place as to what way they put you into the machine.

so yeah, just relax and it'll be fine. i've actually fallen asleep in a few of mine

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 06:05 PM

Try and relax and remember that the people who are going to be doing the scan will have done it for so many other people too, so they know what they're doing - you're in safe hands. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much about the 'what if's' and just relax, you need to take care of yourself and the best way to do that is not to get over worried and worked up about this. If you're finding it hard, try and talk to your doctor because they should be able to put your mind at ease and support you through this - after all, that's what they're there for!

Re: MRI Scan - August 12th 2009, 06:13 PM

I had one at 7 because my eye doctor thought I had a brain tumor (she was wrong and my mom thought it was stupid) It's really not bad unless you're clostrophobic.

It might not be 30 minutes. Mine was because I basically had to get my whole body scanned. Yours may not take that long.

Re: MRI Scan - August 13th 2009, 02:37 AM

I have had to have many MRIs and CAT scans.
The one MRI I remember having done, it took a few hours, cause the machine kept breaking, cause they thought I had a tumor in my head.
Normally, though, they take about 1/2 at most, depending on the machine and how much is being scanned. As long as you aren't very claustorphobic, you'll be fine

Re: MRI Scan - August 15th 2009, 12:52 AM

I had one done... they gave me ear plugs but i couldn't fall asleep cause i was scared just because im clostrophobic. When I had mine they talked to me some(during interveals) The best addvice I can give is to go to sleep it will make it easier and the time will go by quicker.
