Christmas eve traditions - December 24th 2020, 05:39 PM

I've noticed that there is a growing trend here in the UK, of having a Christmas eve box. I understand that the box can contain some early Christmas presents or something Christmasy such as festive pyjamas.

I've never had one but we do have a tradition of watching two particular Christmas films on Christmas eve (The Polar Express and Arthur Christmas) and then having hot chocolate before bed.

I'm wondering if any of you have Christmas eve boxes and what you might typically get in them? Or do you have another Christmas eve tradition you'd like to share?

We don't have a Christmas Eve box, but we do have the tradition of, every year, we will put on a nice food spread. Pretty much a bunch of unhealthy food.

My mum prepares the turkey/duck/goose/chicken (I dislike turkey so I always have some other form of poultry) ready for the next day.

We also have a bit of light alcohol to celebrate the day, and generally just relax.

By tradition we always fire the Christmas pudding.

Last Christmas Maman asked me to light the Christmas pudding over which I glugged a bit too much Cognac. It will be positively the last time. I'm glad I pulled back in time - when a small mushroom cloud of flames belched from the pudding to blacken the ceiling!

Maman said she'll do it future, but her language would have made a sailor blush. And she and our friend Simon rued the time never to play Monopoly with Julie and me. We thrashed them and came out dual victors.
