The day of silence -
April 15th 2009, 07:47 PM
OK, so my school is gonna do the day of silence on friday
(thats where you dont say anything the whole day, in order to draw attention to the silence that LGBT kids are forced to endure for fear that expressing their sexuality wont be excepted by their peers, parents and or friends. its terrible to have to hide any part of yourself from the world, so on april 17th speak up by not speaking) anyways, I made this poster in media arts class for it, and I wanted someones opinion. so be honest, even if it sucks. Im having trouble thinking of something else to write on it, and of the placement of the words, so advice is very welcome. I also think im gonna remove the tear to try for a more realistic one... Its a brand new day. The sun is High. All the birds are singing that
you're gonna die |

Hey there, Nicole.
I'm going to leave this thread open, despite there being a current discussion in the LGBT forum about the Day of Silence, since you're asking for opinions on a poster. I just want to direct anyone who wants to discuss the actual Day of Silence to that thread, located [here]. Please keep this thread on topic--that is, please make sure posts in this thread are about the poster. Thanks. =] Okay, that's out of the way! So, I like the idea behind the poster. A lot. My suggestions are as follows: - Either sharpen the edge of the zipper or blend it better. If you're working in Photoshop and in layers, this shouldn't be too hard. If you sharpen it, you could give it a sewn on appearance using the pen tool and paths, or another method. I think it'd look best that way. - I would redo the teardrop. Again, if you're using Photoshop, there is a custom shape tool that you could use that is actually called "raindrop", but eh, it looks like a tear. Or you could use the pen tool and paths, and make your own. Play around with embossing, transparency, shadows and other options to make it look more realistic.- And last, I do like the "Silence isn't Golden" bit, but I also think that it might be misunderstood by a lot of people. Because it's the Day of Silence people might not understand what you are getting at. Think of some of your other options. Our t-shirts for the Day of Silence one year said "Sometimes silence speaks louder than words." - I lied, one more thing. Playing around with color overlays and stuff may me fun. Or even black and white or sepia filters. Have fun! And you know that, mother, I'd be lying, if I didn't tell you I'm afraid of dying. I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind |

Jessie gave good suggestions. I like the idea of the poster, and what it stands for, but I'm not sure if the right message is being conveyed.
Congrats on making such an awesome effort though. "Life is pain, anybody that says different is selling something" ~ Fezzik's Mother, The Princess Bride. ♥ "To die, would be an awfully big adventure."~ Peter Pan "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ The Buddha 14-04-2010.
